Default 1972 carpet

Carpet choices for a 72 are 80/20 loop or cutpile. What was the original carpet? Which do you prefer?

I believe that only 80/20 loop carpet was available in 1972. Which is 'better'? It's a personal preference decision.

Beginning in 1970 there were two types of carpet it depended on what interior came with your car. The deluxe interior was leather seats, wood trim on the console and door panels and the cut pile carpet. Standard interior was the 80/20 loop.

The deluxe interior cars started in 1970 and you had the option all the way to 1976. All 1977 cars were deluxe interior. This option came with deluxe door panels that had carpet at the bottom, a chrome trim over that carpet, a chrome plate toward the upper part of the door panel and wood trim. This deluxe package also included smooth visors, leather (leather vinyl) seat cover and cut pile carpet.

Personally I like the cut pile look better in all cars, but as Charlie said above the loop (80/20) is more durable.

As mentioned above the standard interior was the 80/20 cut pile carpet. The original manufacture was imco and had the imco marking on the heal pad. Starting in 72 the imco marking was eliminated.

Personal opinion: i hate the cute pile carpet. It looks and feels like a cheap fleece shirt. I much prefer the 80/20 loop carpet. To me, it actually looks and feels more luxurious than the cut pile.

Ed... I hate to go against the grain with anyone... but facts are facts... I mean no harm by my post on what is factual.

So... lets' not be confused on this....

The original carpet was made by J.P Stevens company.... Not IMCO... They only made the heal pad... and it had the IMCO logo stamped into it.

I have boxes of original samples here dating back to the mid 70's with the Stevens labels to back this.

You can review part of this on our tech page at this link.. This link is where we were helping ACC fix issues with the rear carpet issues. There is also a detailed thread on this forum where others contributed to my desire to find what was right and what was wrong...https://docs.google.com/document/d/1...vOnUyBg8U/edit

There is a company that makes other trim items for Corvettes (no names here) and they boast they were the original manufacturer....THEY are NOT the original manufacture of the carpet and what they don't tell you is that the only component of the original carpet set they made was the heal pad.... PERIOD... they didn't make the carpet. Stevens made the original carpet sets, cut pile or loop.

Wilcox, Please no need to respond so carefully when you have facts to support your point of view. The only name I have seen on the carpet was the Imco marking, it never occurred to me that the carpet and the heal pad were made by different manufactures. The Imco logo disappeared in 72. I appreciate your information and stand corrected. After having the original carpet in my 72 for 47 years one can still be educated.

Hi guys. Interesting thread.

I was unaware that the IMCO logo disappeared in 1972. I'm far from my NCRS judging guide. Is this captured in the guide? Was the entire year without the logo? I ask because my car is an early car (second week of production) and it has numerous '71 parts that were apparently left over.

Thanks.

The new Judging Guide covers this, with the change starting in late 71. This depended on the available color and inventory. The heel pad configuration also changed in late 71-72 with the ribbing not going all to the top.

Ed,

It doesn't help that the company that still makes the pad boast they were the original manufacturer. Now I'll go you one even better, a year ago or so (probably longer) I removed the original carpet in my 72 and replaced it, it was part of the write up I did about rear carpets! I never looked at the heal pad for the logo. But, as usual.. I saved the original and now I'll have to dig it up. I never knew when the IMCO logo went away in 72.

It would be good to check your old 72 carpet. It should not have the imco marking and the ribs on the heel should stop before they reach the top of the pad. I am told that all the repro carpet is sold in this configuration, but the fact that I have still have the original carpet and have not purchased any new carpet, I can only go with hearsay .
