Default 1968 Corvette Search

my father in law passed away in November after a long battle with cancer...while we were going through some things, we found the title to his 1968 Corvette.

this car was stolen from him back in 1974 (or 1973) I'm not exactly sure when. so there probably isn't a computerized record of it anywhere.

I would love to find out what happened to it as it was something that always bothered him and my mother in law...it was one of their first cars together.

vin number 194678S417157
stolen from Holland MI
Don Vos was his name

I've looked through some registries, but not had any luck. Googling the VIN doesn't get me anywhere either. Does anyone have other places to have a look?

My condolences for your families loss. Have you searched the C3registy.com site?

Odds are the car is alive and well somewhere, but the VIN died the day it was stolen. Nobody would dare try to sell or title it with a listed stolen VIN.

A few years ago he swore he saw it at a car show, but when he looked at it closer decided it wasn't his...I'm pretty confident it left the state as the guy that took it was an acquaintance of his, the guy disappeared with the car.

Damn, you even know who took it? I'd be chasing him down, not necessarily the car.

It's not listed here either-

https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...ay-2008-a.html

But you might want to add the VIN and info on the thread-

Sorry for your loss.

Years ago I owned a 68 with a reissued state VIN, the 3 original VIN's on the car were removed.
It was a convertible also.

Silver with blue interior, big block, 4 speed car by any chance?

Sad story, Corvettes always a hot item for thieves, they likely parted it out.

Suggest you call the local (and Canadian too?) police department or have your mother in law talk to them. Police likely would not help me as a curiosity seeker, but I would think they might be sympathetic to you and family, particularly if you know somebody in law enforcement.

I doubt police are going to investigate an auto theft from 1974.

Agree, but law enforcement US and Canadian have access to databases you and I do not. Particularly if you know somebody in law enforcement. Worth a shot, all they can say is no.

The sad fact is that our beautiful cars have always been worth more in parts than the whole car. Or so it seems. For years they were number one on the police stolen list. Lou.

Was it a rare optioned 1968? Maybe that might be one way to track it. For example, there were only 80 L88s...

If there was an insurance claim title or no title paper work ownership would be transferred to the carrier. They may have found it and resold it. Auction services usually handle their theft / recovery losses..

As a retired police officer the data base is some what limited to modern 17 digit vins. This changed in 1984 due to federal reg's.
Our cars carried a 13 digit vin which if not currently assigned a tag would probably not pop on a vin only search in most states.
I'm having a difficult time locating some of the previous owners of my 1968 with the limited info I have. The history is just not always there on LE data bases.
I think after a certain time dead tags and Vin's are purged from state data bases just for more storage space and records management purposes.
I'm not sure how long they keep a vehicle in the system before purging.
You have a daunting task ahead of you without talking to the thief. He may have disposed of the car so long ago that even that info may render a dead end to your search.
Some things in life are lost forever. I am truly sorry for the loss of your Father. Good Fathers are hard to come by today.

I agree, however, this is why I suggested the DMVdesk, com website. About 6 months ago, I tracked down a 1977 Pontiac T/A that I used to own, using that site. It was initially suggested by another poster, here....
