Default removing adhesive

Hello Everyone
I need some advice on reattaching the Stingray emblem on a 69 I just purchased. There is a lot of black adhesive on the fender that
I want to remove without harming the paint. The adhesive is as hard as a rock and not about to peel off.
Thanks in advance for your thoughts..Jerbar43

Try warming it with a hair dryer to see if it softens any. Do NOT put it on HIGH temp setting; do NOT hold outlet closer than 3-6" away from paint. Putting a small HOT SPOT into the paint on a plastic car may be asking for more trouble! Just warm-up an area of 1-2 square feet with the emblem area at the center. Once the fender is warm to the touch at that spot, see if the adhesive is softer. If so, warm it so it is as warm as you feel comfortable to do; then use Goo-Gone or other non-damaging solvent (grease/bug cleaner) to see if it will do the job.

If that won't get the job done, call a local auto body repair shop to see what they would use. Prep-Sol is a solvent that pros use to clean paint surface, but that stuff is expensive and you have to buy in gallon (or larger) size. Perhaps that body shop will 'invite' you to stop by so they can loosen/remove the adhesive for you.

3M Weatherstrip Remover (spray or liquid) is paint safe to include the original lacquer used until about 1980. A plastic knife [seems] a safe tool but I can't make guarantees. I used a plastic knife to remove the weatherstrip adhesive on my '79 (original paint) and noticed no damage whatsoever to the paint but this wasn't in visible areas

A can of silicone spray lubricant and an old credit card. 100% works 100% of the time.

3M adhesive remover is great stuff. It does not attack cured painted surfaces.

3M also makes double sided emblem install tape. A bit of a chore to cut and fit but it does work.

You can buy the rubber wheels made by 3M for adhesive removal. Chucks up in a regular drill. Run at slow speed. Just took the dealer sticker off my truck and worked well.

I just replaced front fender emblems on my '65 Grand Prix. I used Gorilla 'clear' mounting tape. Couldn't find it at local stores, so made an internet buy. GREAT STUFF!
And it's clear so you don't have to use your exacto knife to 'whittle' the little see-thru areas out of it.
