Unless he is talking about the Duntov turbo. I still don't think it was 385HP. I think about only 80 or so were built out of a supposed run of 200. They did not sell well.Car was butt ugly!
There is an old war story around here about a long decommissioned local Chevy dealer owned by a hot rodder who hated the EPA regs. As the story goes, he acquired several L-46 crate counter engines brand new from GM. If you new, or new someone in the know, they would take a brand new Vette or Z-28 and swap a L-46 into it as a dealer option. They would also pull the cat and run standard dual exhaust. Also as the story goes, the EPA caught wind and started turning up rocks, and the remaining L-46's were removed from the dealer under the cover of darkness and sold off on the used market. Nothing was ever proven and it eventually went away.
I'd bet this wasn't the only dealer pulling this stuff off back then.
There is a local add for a "rare" 385hp 1981 corvette. Everywhere I look says only 190hp in 1981. The seller says there are 500 of these. Whats up.
Not a chance in hell it came from the factory. I was big into SCCA racing in the 80's and if such an animal existed it would have found its way to the race track and been all conquering. The racers would have been all over such a car before it hit the end of the assembly line.
