I think possibly the C2 63-67 were the actual stingrays but because of the popularity of it's name they tried to carry it over to the C3's to help sales. Eventually it faded but then with the body style of the C7 that somewhat resembles a C3, they brought it back again.
In my world it's the body style that's a Stingray! JMO! Mine is one of the years that happens to have the badges but so what. Its only a little adhesive that holds those badges on the Stingray body!
Agreed! All C3's have the Stingray body, some have the badges and some don't. It's up to the owner.
My 1980 had stingray emblems on it when I bought her home . Although I call it a shark . And my 76 has them al well. But I call that one a killer whale .
"Stingray" is an option package. All sugar-scoop C3s with a single pair of brake/turn lights, exterior door handles separate from door locks, steering-column mounted ignition, and a metal center gauge cluster were part of the "Stingray" package. They carried the "Stingray" script on the fender. They hadn't completed all of the required options in 1968, so no script. In 1977, the center console was upgraded to handle larger 8-track players, creating a trim level higher than the "Stingray", so the name was dropped to avoid confusion. Or for some other reason, no one really knows.
Oh crap!
When I repaint my 73 I'm planning to leave the "Stingray" and all other badges off the car except the "Corvette" lettering on the rear panel.
Can I no longer be part of the "Stingray Club"?
I don't think it matters either way.
I always refer to mine as a 73 Corvette because that is what it is.
Maybe I'll de-badge mine and remove ALL the emblems. Probably look better.
I like the look without all the badges.
I think the badging breaks up the flow of the bodies line.
In my opinion the rear panel looks plain and larger than it is without the lettering to break It up.
I looked through all the color and wheel threads and noticed I liked the look better without the badges.
Im even going to remove the coveted 454 badge on the hood.
Again just my opinion.
I agree and think that when most people see a C3, they automatically think Stingray.
If I tell someone I own a C3 they look at me and I can tell they have no clue.
If I say I own a 73 Corvette, they will usually ask if its one of those Stingrays.
He had a c8 2021 and was awaiting the new Z06. In fact put a deposit down and had a very envious production number even though they pushed it back a year.. What I never got to ask him though is why he didn't care for the stingray emblem on his c8.
After working 35 years for GM, I know that he knew why the badge was not legitimate. Can y'all tell me?
Many Thanks.

Sorry for your loss.
If it came from the factory with the badge, it's a Stingray or "Sting Ray" for the C2s. GM makes the car, they get to name it. Though for C7s and C8s, it is a trim level.
Just wait until GM starts selling all-electric Corvettes.

This is an interesting question, but not really related to this old thread from 2019 which beats this argument to death routinely on this site.
You should start a new thread with your question, although its likely it will devolve into the Stingray badge argument again.
