All C3's have the Stingray BODY STYLE. That's a fact which is not in dispute. Some of those years do not have the "Stingray" badges on them. So, "A rose, by any other name, is still A ROSE."
YOU decide whether to identify YOUR car as a Stingray, or not. It doesn't matter what the rest of us think.
P.S. Some of the C2 folks get miffed identifying C3's as Stingrays. But, C2's were badged as "Sting Ray"s; C3's are "Stingray"s

Mine has parts from several different years of Corvette and the big block was originally from a heavy truck (tall deck), so when I get the Stingray question the best answer sounds like a Johnny Cash's "One Piece at a Time". But as far as being correct goes, GM didn't slap the Stingray emblem on my '77 and it stayed that way through the end of the C3 generation. Interesting marketing brochures on the '68 model that didn't end up with the emblems either.
Strictly ....NOT A STINGRAY....or even a STING-RAY.
No matter how many times 'one' lies....does NOT make a TRUTH.
When I'm looking for a C-3....and the poster has (say) an '80....and SAYS it's a Stingray...I move on to the next ad....because the poster KNOWS NOTHING.
BTW If you drive a four-door sedan....it's not a COUPE' EITHER!
Of course this is going to go on FOREVER.
My 69 is a REAL STINGRAY....MY 82 is not...but could be 'called' a MAKO.....thank god there's no Mako emblems!
Unkahal
Ps this is not a NCRS thing, it's a TRUTH thing....and TRUTH is black or white.
I think where everyone goes wrong (people that don't know the history of Corvettes) is they think Stingray means some sort of option package or trim level in '69 thru '76 like we see today with say.........a Ford Fusion Titanium. "Hey, Nice Fusion, is that a Titanium"?
"Hey, Nice Corvette, is that a Stingray"? Stingray doesn't mean jack ****. It's just an emblem on the front fender. There is no special engine or brake option or higher trim level associated with the name Stingray or the emblem on the fender. If you have the emblem it's a Stingray so all '69 thru '76's are Stingrays. Period, end of story.
Hmmm so you say END OF STORY like this hasn't been going on for 40 years....
No SIR! 'not end of story'.
BTW. Be more genteel....there are certain words you don't use on a public forum.
Unkahal.
Yes "End of the story".
And what words are you talking about? ****? If you can't take that word I suggest staying off the internet there grammar police. We used to be censored on CF but since we are mostly adults they stopped it and now I can express my 1st amendment GOD GIVEN right of freedom of speech. If you are offended with my choice of words then don't read my posts. Simple and END OF STORY.

"Stingray" is an option package. All sugar-scoop C3s with a single pair of brake/turn lights, exterior door handles separate from door locks, steering-column mounted ignition, and a metal center gauge cluster were part of the "Stingray" package. They carried the "Stingray" script on the fender. They hadn't completed all of the required options in 1968, so no script. In 1977, the center console was upgraded to handle larger 8-track players, creating a trim level higher than the "Stingray", so the name was dropped to avoid confusion. Or for some other reason, no one really knows.
(still waiting for that sarcasm tag)

It's amazing that there are some on this Forum who absolutely know the TRUTH...regardless of how many feel otherwise. For me, this is not an issue of "truth" versus 'clearly being wrong", as these folks believe. It is a matter of some elitists knowing better than anyone else versus EVERYONE's RIGHT to have an opinion on a clearly GRAY area.
Different folks call the C3 body style "Mako", Coke bottle, as well as "Stingray". But several C3 model years have the "Stingray" badges on them. The "all knowing" say if the badge isn't there, then it isn't one. OK, that's their opinion; and it is valid FOR THEM. But, they also claim than other folks who believe that the body style is the determining factor, whether it is badged as a "Stingray" or not, are WRONG!!! No if's, no maybe's, no but's...they are just ignorant and oblivious to reality.
Well, I think I know who's been spending too much time on Twitter. Talk about being out of touch with reality....

Wow! How can people get so worked up by this topic. It’s not like we’re talking about names like ZL-1, ZR-1, ZR-2 or anything like that. I have a ‘72, so it came with a Stingray badge on it. Big deal. So did every other Corvette produced that year. You know what else it came with? A base model small block, automatic transmission, manual windows, and vinyl seats. Big whoop. If someone wants to call their ‘78 or ‘82 a Stingray I say let them. It’s still basically the same car. Same manufacturer, same profile, same suspension, and basically the same engine.

In my world it's the body style that's a Stingray! JMO! Mine is one of the years that happens to have the badges but so what. Its only a little adhesive that holds those badges on the Stingray body!
Stingray, Mako Shark make your choice, I know the shark profile fits the C3 better but to me Stingray sounds cooler JMPO lol. I have to wonder if the marketing dept at GM were struck with the same conundrum? Mako shark concept car Mako shark Stingray 'Nuff said:-)
