If your wheel turns theres nothing wrong with it. And It's the same as a 67 column like alot of the front steering is fyi.
The covers don't line up perfectly and they probably won't. You can take the bottom cover off at the dash and look at the 2 bolts that hold it to the dash and make sure it isn't shimmed down.

Mine has 51/2 inches clearance and the column looks tilted down but its an optical illusion. That first space going r to l os way too wide, I look at both of my columns and theres no space there, somethings not right.

Bushman, FYI my brothers 68 sat what I considered too low as well which is why I'm putting a tilt column in it. As others have said make sure it isn't shimmed down on the two bolts closest to the steering end of the shaft. Other than that there isn't alot that can be done being the shaft is a straight shot into the box. Perhaps you have something weird going on with the seat raising it up? Sagging body mounts could pull down the angle alittle, but boy they would have to be damn near non-existent to impact the angle to any noticeable degree I would think. Here are some pics of cars I've found online for you to compare.
Hate to say it but I'll bet most of the problem is us... Many of us are quite a bit fatter and taller than what the average purchaser would have been in 1968.
Thanks! Looking at the pics, not sure the issue is in the steering column angle, looks like it's more in the bottom seat cushion. When it drops below 110, we can pull the seat and investigate further.
Don't think its body mounts, it's an older frame off resto, so the undercarriage looks solid and clean.
Ok and I know this is unacceptable to many, but if all else fails, remove the seat adjuster, decide where you want the seat to be, and bolt the seat directly to the floor holes underside brackets with flat bar. That would be gain you maybe a couple of inches, is reversible, retain all of the original components and hopefully the cushion will settle eventually one day.
I have a stock 68 roadster. Your column is fine. Using your method I have 4.5 inches of clearance wheel to seat. The seats were restored 20 years ago, but used little, so we might expect a half inch loss of loft. As Rescue Rogers commented, there is really only one way to enter/exit the vehicle due to the cramping. The cockpit is most suited to those with chicken legs and a streamlined gut. I suggest a smaller wheel.

Thanks! He picked up a 14.5" Grant "Corvette Classic Series" wheel, so that should open up .75" of thigh room, and it's 1.5" closer to the dash due to less dish, so that will help too. We still need to pull the seat, it just seems weird to me, I definitely recall sitting much lower in the car in my 1969 convertible in college. As far as I know, they did not make any changes to the floorpan or seats from 68 to 69.

When the foam and springs wear out, you will sit lower. My butt was sitting on the fiberglass. I figured that out when I pulled the seats and set them on the garage floor to compare with my c5 seats. When I sat on the original sets I hit the concrete so hard I thought I created a second crack
I could swear that your 68 wheel has too much dish to it. I know that the C-2's had more dish to their wheel. I do not know for sure but I bet the 67's had a different dish wheel than our 68's.
Anyone know this for sure? Lou.
Same thing here
I installed New springs, foam and leather seat covers and now can barely get leg under wheel and I sit higher.
I have a 69 E so I have the same big steering wheel as the 69
i will order smaller wheel to get my leg under it.
On a positive note my wife can drive it now without sitting on a pillow.
My understanding is they made large steering wheels early because most cars did not have power steering and it was to assist turning the wheels
Bushmann66, Is your son's car color white? I have a white/red interior 68 Coupe. Lou.
Yep. He is going to convert it to a black interior. He doesn't care much about originality (to a degree), he says the only ones that care about originality are old farts like me.
