I have the cushion as well. I would love that compartment though. I have theh 68 console so it has the seat belt holder holes, which I put small things in instead of the belt buckles....
The unpadded, and funky, unhinged "pop top" design is better than no storage option - but, you're right, the color accuracy is a consideration. I was the accessories planning manager at Ford for several years of my career there and recall bringing in a customer-installable accessory console/storage compartment for the Escort/Tracer. A beautiful/functional piece from our Canadian supplier, Foha. The chosen supplier had no problem matching the (two) interior colors that I wanted to offer, but I remember that they had to spend a lot of time with my trim engineer perfecting the grain match before they could get engineering sign-off for their tooling and design. Its very tough for aftermarket companies to match OE quality without any OE engineering guidance on the proper specs. I never once evaluated an aftermarket accessory product that came close to passing Ford's engineering/testing specs on the first try (to our disappointment) - and, even then they need help to pass muster which is non-existent to the aftermarket, or often to the actual OE accessory supplier after the vehicle's lifecycle ends. You have to move your very limited resources (engineering, tooling, design, et al) on to the next new models that need factory-tested/released accessories to ensure Job 1 readiness and Dealer/Customer availability.
