71 coupe- outside of a trans fluid leak ( car been sitting years but running now) and putting new door weatherstrips on I think it is ready to test run. My new door panels have none of the screws in it other than those two lower metal clips. I watched youtube on putting door weatherstrip on and appears you just glur on front side near hinges but on other side a screw goes through it near top outer edge of panel? Do I need to put hole in new panel for weatherstrip? hinge side just get glued? does all of weatherstrip get glues aroud sides and bottom or just several areas just to keep in place? thanks -My Christmas gift later this year is locating and buying a AIM manual. so far I replaced door panels, guage bezel, brake console sills, etc..numerous things like vac hose kit, exhaust, on and on.- just to try and get this 'road ready from dealr actually road ready. brake rotors were sitting in 3" of antifreeze on pass floor when delivered by trucking. and of course had to 'push' it off truck and into garage.
I just replaced all the weatherstripping on my '73 coup and yes there were screws holding the door weatherstrips at the top of the doors front and rear. I'd assume the '71 is the same, but others may chime in here. When you go to order weatherstripping I'd highly recommend Willcox or Corvette America as they carry the made in USA EPDM rubber weatherstrip from ACC and it's certainly worth the money. Mine fit perfectly. Willcox has sales and I got the 'whole car' package which was a good deal, and you'll need the T-top weatherstripping at some point anyway. Good luck with the new vette.
I'm almost certain that the reason the replacement door panels and some other interior pieces don't have holes for fasteners is because they didn't exist in the original parts either. They were put into position and drilled through both the panel and the metal underneath in one stroke. That makes it very difficult to install new panels using the old holes. I suggest you do like the factory and put the panel into place and drill your own mounting hole. There's not a huge amount of space for the screw at the top-rear of the panel but certainly enough for another hole.
Buy ONLY the USA made CRC (Corvette Rubber Company) weatherstripping as it's a perfect fit. Others are Chinese made and do not fit well. The CRC seals aren't the exact same material as the original because it's banned as a hideously nasty product (when manufacturing) in North America--the "best" Chinese stuff is closer (of course they don't care and it's likely made by political prisoners or North Korean "slaves" anyway) but it still doesn't fit properly.
awsome pics! that tells it all- thank you! so adheasive goes on door front/rear/bottom.. so solid string of it all way around (on door).. do I also do same on the rubber or just the door? Thanks a million!
I used a small bead on the door sort of on the flat of where the flat meets the corner, doesn't take much, and hold the weatherstrip in place with a bit of tape until it dries. Make sure everything it clean (alcohol) and dry, test fit to see how it sits since it's really a one shot item
