Default Chrome mirror conversion

Hey everyone

Before I reinstall the door panels, I would like to replace the sport mirrors of my 77 with chrome mirrors I bought.
I know the holes are different (chrome mirror holes are closer together), So I will have to use a backing plate or something to mask the exusting holes from the sport mirrors.

Does anyone have ever done conversion from Qport to chrome mirrors, without filling the holes and repainting the doors?
Does anyone have pictures?

Really need some help here... Don't know how to do this job and get good results.

I don't want to repaint the door.

I would get some thin aluminum, cut it to the shape of the mirror base. Make it big enough to cover the holes. Then after you drill the proper holes thru that either polish it or paint it. You should be fine.

I've been planning on doing this conversion and this is actually a pretty good idea.

Some pics of the conversion, going to the stock tall chrome mirrors from the rally sport mirrors you will end up with an extra hole, yes i have done this two times. The rally mirrors look cool but have bad visibility, the stock mirrors give a better view over the hump in the back but i think they stick up to far so i have them turned upside down in the blue paint job.
Hope this helps.

Do you know if it is possible to use the well nuts (that are with a new chrome mirror set) in combination with one of the existing holes from the sport mirrors (so I only have to drill one new hole)?

Since i was going to repaint the car, i tried the rubber well nuts on the passenger side but they just worked loose, i believe the drivers side has a metal plate embedded in the door, the pass side has no provisions for mounting the mirror.
Since i had a machine shop at my disposal at work i just made a plate, still had to cut the inside of the pass door to clear the window.

You can also find some thin black plastic. Cut it to shape and then glue it to the bottom of the gasket. It will blend right in.

Is it even possible to remove the sport mirrors without removing the glass?
What wrench of socket type do you guys use to get the mirror nuts loose... There is very little room...

Take the bottom stops out of the window tracks. Lower the glass as far as it will go. Then use a 1/4 inch drive ratchet and extension and swivel. Keep the kids and wife out of the garage because there will be some cursing going on. I removed the sport mirrors on my 80 when I painted it and thats how I did it.

By surprise I got the nuts of the RH mirror loose with the following improvised tool...
I just used some 'gaffa-tape' to hold the 7/16" socket on the small thin wrench.
I had just enough room between the glass and the two nuts...

I only removed the two anti-rattle cushions the rest stayed in place.

Default Mirrors

Have you considered no side mirrors? Use a custom interior rear view mirror to check blinds

What do you mean with the 'custom interior mirrors'?
Do you have any pics of them?

Interior rear view mirrors are available to view blind spots so no side view mirror is neeed, I use in mine and it works perfectly
