Why does everyone call it a Vega wheel on the '76? I had a Chevelle with that wheel and as others have said it was used on the Camaro. It also wasn't just a 76 item. Non tilt tele Vettes had the same wheel at least until 1979. So I guess it was also a Corvette wheel. I've seen a couple of Cosworth Vegas I wouldn't mind owning either.
As I said earlier, I find it funny that it gets called a Vega steering wheel. It was on a whole lot more than just the Vegas, but because that car wasn't viewed very well, the negative connotation. I don't consider it to be the best looking steering wheel I've ever owned, but it is period correct and it'll probably stay on my 76...
FWIW, know that a smaller diameter wheel will make steering, especially parking, more of a challenge if you don’t have power steering. I imagine this would be especially true with the (heavier) LS5 engine. If you have power steering, a smaller diameter wheel should “fit” your bill.
Great point. I don't have power steering but that will be my next improvement project after solving the "lack of clearance" issue between the wheel and seat. The interior, including seat foams, has been completely replaced along with ZIP's correct replacement upholstery package. That firmer seat foam ate up some of the clearance.

I had your problem and changed my factory wheel to a smaller wheel with less dish (to get it farther away from me). It did make it better to get in and out of the car car but its not perfect. I still want to change it for a tilt column some day.

It's hard to believe that no aftermarket manufacturer has come up with a couple sporty versions of a steering wheel that is a direct sway for the 1976 stock wheel since it came out? Wouldn't that also be in demand for the other GM cars listed above with the same "Vega" steering wheel?
I can live with my stock wheel but a sporty "direct swap" option would be nice.
