Default '70 454 Carb Replacement Thoughts?

My original carb is coming off the '70 LS5 probably to be rebuilt. I dont want to wait as long as it is going to take to ship the carb away and have it rebuilt and shipped back so I am looking for any experience anyone here has with a replacement carb that is very suitable and fits without problems. Was looking at the Holley 770 Street Avenger but am told it wont fit properly. Does anyone here have a replacement carb on this same engine that you would recommend?

Look at a Holley spreadbore series 4165 double pumper or spreadbore series 4175 vacuum secondary.

Thanks... I went ahead and ordered a rebuilt Rochester for the same model (7040205) to use while mine goes for rebuilding... after some researching of cost, clearance of hood etc.. it just seemed the best way to go for a guaranteed easy swap out.

If the original carb has not had a prior rebuild (so that the parts have not been altered), just get a carb rebuild kit and do it yourself in a day. If it has worked well in the past and it still has the original parts, should be an easy redo.

Good decision to stay with the Rochester.

Good luck with that rebuilder Q-jet..............8 of 10 do not work right and are assembled improperly with wrong parts.
I would have found a 4175 used, maybe on E-bay or a new one.........they work very well and are easy to refurb and adjust.

That's true, if the carb has had prior rebuild work done to it. But, if you know that it has the same configuration as when new, those issues are [generally] not in play. If the carb didn't work properly when new, the dealer would have replaced it under a warranty repair many years ago. However, if you know that this carb has been "worked on" in the past, doing the rebuild yourself is not a good option.

To the OP: Surely you have someone that does have basic mechanical skills whom you can team-up with for this effort.....

Absolutely... I have a buddy that is a master mechanic at Firestone... He is doing the install and any tuning that it may need... He is also doing the re-build of the original on his time... That's why I was looking for something to drop in so I can drive it and not rush him. I am confident it should work out ok... If not, will look at Holley options again or just wait it out.
He is the only person that I allow to work on the car and has my full trust.

He bought a rebuilder unit to use while his original is going to the pro shop....

Lars is the man you want rebuilding a Q-Jet. Your buddy may be a master mechanic at Firestone but cars have not been equipped with carburetors for over 30 years. Lars is an expert on the Q-Jet.
