I have the 78 indy pace car with silver the tops. They have several scratches in the glass on top exterior. I was wondering how I can get these scratches out? Also the stainless cover under the t tops has a few scratches also. Is there any way to get those scratches out or anywhere you send either item to get it done?
If not too deep they can be rubbed out. Go on Youtube and watch some "removing scratches from glass' videos. They make special buffing wheels and compound. You **don't** want to build up too much heat in one area. Make sure there isn't an exterior coating you're going to inadvertently rub off.
An auto glass or general home/auto (local) glass shop might be another suggestion if you don't want to screw with it. Probably cost about the same as you buying the stuff. It would be a quick job for them as they have all the buffers, pads and compound sitting right off to the side. Glass shops cut, fit, grind and polish glass on practically an hourly basis. They might do it right in front of you if they're slow. Probably a better way to go. Just find out if yours are reflective if it's on the inside/outside. I just don't remember.
If you can feel the scratches with a fingernail, they are to deep to polish out. When sanding the hood on my car with an orbital sander, accidentally the sander touched the windshield scratching the glass. I called a mobile glass company. He worked on them for some time, and they would not come out as you could feel the scratches.
I bought an Astro acrylic top a while back that looked like someone had dragged it behind a car. I started water sanding with 1000 grit, then after I had all the scratches removed with the 1000, I switched to 1500 grit for another hour or two, then switched to 2000 for another hour, then used Mcquires 105 with an orbital buffer and it polished up nicely. I would only be very careful with a mirror finish T-top, as the mirror finish may be on the surface only and you might find yourself into clear glass.
