In terms of your fuel tank, I was in the same boat when I picked up my vette and the previous owner said the fuel tank needs replacing. Once I removed the spare wheel I saw the bottom hoses were in pretty rough shape, so i removed the fuel tank and got it pressure tested, turns out the fuel tank had no leaks and it was just the hoses were perished going to the tank.
From my experience it was worth getting it pressure tested, they didn't charge me to test it and if it had a small hole it would've been $100 to have it repaired. So it only cost me 10$ in hose. Rather than $500 for a new tank as I initially suspected.
Lachymac beat me to it. Just make sure the hoses (old and cracked by now) aren't the ONLY source of such leakage before spending good money on new tank when it may not be needed.
Thanks for your help. I checked the lines ,the look ok, I was replacing all the rubber lines anyway. The tank support bar is covered in dry gas, and so was the spare tire. Ill pull he tank and pressure test to see whats going on. The illustration posted here shows a top cover over the tire carrier, I dont have that part. I learn more about vetts as I restoring mine.
The tire covers pieces seem to disappear during certain changes (gas tanks?)
There are a few different versions so if you do want to find one here's a list from Willcox showing what to look for
So Thanks again crew, worked just like you said wet them down couple days. I used a 12" pipe wrench with my jack handle broke them free nice. Then a small pipe wrench to spin them out. I found the build sheet on the top of the tank. Some one had covered it with plastic and tape?? Its not in good shape. Next step replace the gas tank. Buddy"
