Depends on what you want to do and what you have.
I bought Fiero seats and installed four 3.5" Kicker speakers in the head rests.
4x6 Kickers in the dash fit perfectly.
4x6 in the foot wells, not the best but you can see nothing there when you look in the car.
8" Infinity sub in the jack compartment.
None of this can be seen standing beside or sitting in the car.

I went with a Sony blue tooth deck, but any head unit will do as long as it has the features you want.

To power all of this I mounted two 600 watt 4 channel amps on the back wall of the car.
I too can hear anything at high way speeds. The sub makes me feel it.

Most of what I got was on sale or free with points on my credit cards.

Just keep in mind the deck you have may be a 2 ohm or 4 ohm and all the speakers you find today are 4 ohm. Just don't mix them, the 2 ohm speakers will be cranking while the 4 ohms will be starving.

Hope this helps
Ken

PS I forgot to mention, the t-tops still sit in the back no problem.
