Over the years I've had good luck with Alpine products so I have an Alpine head unit and an Alpine 6 disc CD changer mounted behind the drivers seat. I have a set Of Alpine 6x9's mounted in the rear corners and aftermarket speakers in the dash. Plenty of sound for my purpose as I'm not trying to wake the dead. I make all my CD's using Lightscribe from CD's I've downloaded on my computer.
I was thinking of upgrading the radio and speakers because right now it sounds horrible. But I’m thinking maybe just the speakers after looking around. Not mush available. Right now it has an old Blaupunk.
Is that an auto reverse cassette player? If so you can pull it and clean the head to improve the sound quality. A couple of cotton swabs and some alcohol will make a big difference in the sound.
Many people will not cut up a good center dash, I'm not one of them and that's what you'll have to do to improve the radio or spend a lot of money to have your unit upgraded, your money, your choice.

I suspect you already have the din hole in the dash bezel due to the adapter plate already. I went with a Kenwood Media player, replacement Sony speakers in the front kickpanels and two Polk Audio bookshelf speakers in the back. Sounds great to me even with the turbo mufflers.

Reason: Added Picture.
If you already have DIN hole cut out and you don't need to play CDs (I finally realized that I never do), then you can gt one of these little units that hardly take and space behind the dash. I got this cheapie just to have something that worked when my old CD player crapped out. It has an Aux Input and a USB input. I have USB flash drive that can hold like a million songs. Note how "shallow" it is.
My plan is to replace this with one of those CD players that have a pop out screen but it's been working so well that I haven't done anything.
I replaced my 14 year old custom sound radio that amplified every spark and alternator whine and often the exhaust note brought more leastening pleasure than the radio.
Last summer I put a 740 in, bluetooth and perfect radio, navigation and cell phone calls. This summer I'm going to replace my 6 x 9 rear speakers with a soundbar. https://customautosoundmfg.com/produ...radios/usa-740
I bought a Bluetooth receiver/FM transmitter that receives Bluetooth from my phone and transmits on an FM channel to the radio that I can select so that it doesn’t overlap an existing station in the area. I can play my music library or broadcast XM through it and it required no modifications whatsoever. It just plugs into the cigarette lighter and cost around $20. Many choices available on Amazon.

I have an Alpine system in mine. I bought a broken 69 console that was cut up for a DIN radio and repaired the broken piece. I have Polk Audio 4x6s in the kick panels and Pioneer 6x9s in boxes in the back. The headset is Alpine 164BT and I have an Alpine PWSE powered subwoofer and an Alppine MRV-F300 300 watt amp. It all sounds great even better witht he top down and the side exhaust roaring
I went with a retro sound head unit as I didn’t want to cut up the dash. Head unit can actually be separated from the face unit and be mounted remotely. Mine is, along with a small amp. Went with 6x9s in the rear and smaller speakers in the kick panels (can’t remember dimensions) Also a powered 10 “shallow sub mounted upside down under the deck lid. Sounds great and powerful enough to hear with the tops off and doing 70 mph without compromising space for the t tops. Have 2 usb inputs, sirius xm and bluetooth with remote mic. Been very pleased so far
