hi, my driver side door handle on the inside is very loose on my 68 vette. tried to tighten the screw to no avail. feels like it is going to fall off any ideas?
The thread is stripped ? It's only a cast alloy block that the handle slides into. You might have to find a slightly bigger screw thread that could bite into what's left of the threaded hole.
No surprise that the drivers side is giving you problems. It is used most often. Does the screw tighten? If so, either the handle is broken or the mount attached to the door is broken. The handle has an upper and lower grove that fits into a corresponding grove on the door mount. Remove the handle and look to see if either grove is broken. If it's the handle, replace it. If it's the mount, remove the door panel and vapor barrier. Next, remove the clips that hold the rods on and remove the mechanism and replace. Good luck. Jerry
Yes if the screw doesn't hold and those cast 90* pieces are broken off /damaged , then not much else you can do but replace , its the cast alloy piece that nearly always fail . Usually because the door lock rods aren't adjusted properly and the lock itself might be seizing up , or a combo. of both . Also some people just force things like door handles on old cars .
