Default Tachometer reset

On my 81, I pulled my tachometer and replaced the tach board because it wasn't reading the RMP's correctly. Now its in it doesn't start at the correct starting position. When Idling its at like 100, when at maybe 3000 rmp's it shows 2000, at 4000 it's at 1000. It's working but its not at the correct starting position. How do I set its starting position?

with ignition on and engine off, does it read zero? If not, you can remove the actual needle and put it back on at zero. And I think with the key off, it's ok for the tach needle to show between 1-2k. Also, I remember reading something somewhere about making sure the input from the distributor goes to a specific spot, otherwise the board may interperet the signal for a 6 or 4 cylinder? Not sure if it is applicable to yours or not. I've been reading an awful lot lately and can't find the specific webpage about it right now.

Hope this helps.
