Default Storage strap anchors

I want to put the storage straps back in my 1979 corvette but can not remember the exact location to mount them. Secondly will door trim screws work or do I need to get specific screws for the anchors.

The front one is just above the park-brake console and the two rear ones should be about 4" ahead of the rear of the wheel-well on a slight angle.
Although newer than mine I believe they still used bolts into a metal plate under the glass to secure the footman loops.
On mine, you can see the plate inside the rear wheel-well

If yours is the same poke an awl up through the holes to mark where they go.

For the older ones the footman loops sat on top of the carpet with little spacers to bring them up through the carpet pile. I've read that on the newer ones, the parking brake one was like that but the rear were under the carpet with a slit cut to let them stick through. I don't know either way on your 79

Get a large needle (big one about 2 inches long or so), and just start poking it thru the carpet in the close area of the screw holes for the strap anchors. Pretty soon you will find a hole. Mark it or, using a pencil type soldering iron, melt a hole for the screw in that location. Its "mate" will be a distance directly left or directly right of that hole and will be much easier to find. Do that for all three anchors and mount the hardware. Worked well for me!

re: screws

They're the trim screws (with rings) used throughout the interior. Note that there are different lengths of these and two (I believe) gauges. I believe they are the medium length, heavier gauge screws.

Unless it got changed in later years, all three of the tie-down anchors were mounted on top of the carpeting.

The few references I've seen seem to match the image up there for the later cars, (probably 78+ ?) where the rear two were under the carpet with a slit rather than like ours sitting on top.

If those later cars have the same 2-screw hardware as the front piece, hard to understand why GM would choose to slit the carpet. I sure wouldn't put it together like that.

I totally agree and don't know why the carpet wouldn't move all around without them screwed through it. Only going by what I've seen. Buddy of mine has an original 80 he bought new, never touched inside, I'll have to check someday.
Anyone with an AIM out there lol

There you go, slit

On the older ones it was on top

Don't know when it changed, I would guess 78 when the rear compartment changed a bit but I don't know, that's only a guess

Just checked my ‘77 and the carpet is slit for the rear two and not on the front one.

Not sure if the carpet is original to the car.
