before i order a set of headers from summit racing would like to check here, HOOKER COMPETITION HEADERS 2456HKR, has any one tried them and do they fit summit racing says yes, like to get other views I plan on painting them red before i take them to my exhaust mechanic thank for any advice
yes every thing was removed prior to me buying it, new rebuilt carb by lars, new dist new plug wires, new plugs, erg removed and plated over, the early 1081 came with a cast manafold the later came with short headers, with heat risers, removed all that pluged the holes in the headers, now its time to put long headers in it and new exhaust.
Prefer if someone with an 81 responds but see nothing about the headers that should be an issue. As far as the rest of the system not sure if the transmission crossmember is different from earlier true dual exhaust cars.

Yes, the transmission crossmember has a single dimple for the double-Y configuration exhaust. Fortunately, even the 4-speed cars came with a bolt-in crossmember, so it can be removed and modified, or replaced. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to solve this problem on my 80, then got side pipes instead.
I did run that same set of headers years ago on my first 81 and had no issues with them. The issue with trying to run a true dual exhaust with the 81-82 cars is that the drivers side floor pan hangs down much lower than the passenger side pan. This is caused by the floor pan being deeper due to the power seat option that was added for the 81-82 years. You can try to run the exhaust pipe under the drivers side pan but it will hang really low. The way I did it was to run the dual exhaust down the same way as the stock exhaust. There is enough room to run both pipes under the passengers side floor pan. I did change out the cross member to a G Force cross member. It was due to going to a 4L60E transmission so it gave me the option to run the drivers side pipe along that side but then turned it before it hit the drivers side floor pan and run it with the passenger side pipe. I am running ARH stainless full length headers. I think maybe a earlier bolt in cross member might work the same with the two exhaust pipe openings. Here is a picture how I ran mine.

correct me if iam wrong did a search and they make header spray paint
You may want to look into ceramic coating of the headers, inside and out. Jet-Hot.com, for example, does this. In addition to appearance, the ceramic serves to insulate the headers, for longer life and for keeping underhood temps down. I think you need to test fit the headers first, in case you need to have a clearance dent hammered into them. So, more labor is involved, but possibly a longer-lasting, and better solution.
Since you are searching for solutions anyway, you may have missed this one.
I used a true dual Magnaflux exhaust with cheapo Summit brand headers. The left side pipe crossed over to the right side and went down to the back where they split, had a balance tube also, nice sounding and seat of pants HP went way up.
