When you find the proper size and should you discover that the screws won't hold well:
1) Extremely unlikely that the next larger screw will fit through whatever it holds.
2) When #1 happens remove the door panel. Inspect the holes for rust. If significant rust you have a major problem. Otherwise get some 16 gauge or so galvanized wire, cut some 2" or so pieces, bend them in half and "hang" them in the holes. Test fit each screw with one piece of wire. If not enough use two new ones.

This is one of the first tips I received at this forum and it works well. The problem is that the holes distort somewhat each time the screw is installed or removed. Providing rust is not a problem the true if insanely involved/impractical solution is to hammer or press the hole flat which requires access to the back side.
