Anyone run eBay cheap seat belts? Seems a lot say fit the 68-82 corvette and they look like the style I have in my 78. Mine are very worn and in bad shape and wanted to replace. They are the ones up in the sail panels 3pt I believe but the car has never been together and it’s basically a shell with no interior. The belts are in. If they don’t really retract or anything.
I went inexpensive-thinking going cheap on seat belts that are questionable quality -doesn't sound like a great idea.
Went to the junkyard-pulled some rear seat belts out of Mercedes IIRC 600 SEL- looks like they had never been used- great shape- really nice material. New these thing are probably a grand+.
I was all in for $20-25.
Others have used the rear seat belts out of 97-02 Firebird/Camaro
"Cheap" and "C3" are not terms that usually go together. When I search Ebay,
I always used the advanced search, and exclude the word "fits".....
it cuts out a LOT of the generic "one size fits all" type of entries.
I read about the 4th gen firebird seat belts and what’s interesting is that I have 2 spare sets just lying around. But looking at the mods looked like a good bit of work obviously if I could get a generic set
to bolt in for $70 that’s worth less than my time but like everyone has said it’s not a place to skimp. They look like some are SAE rated which is why I was asking about them.
If you have the old belt set, just have it re-webbed. New webbing material sewn to the stub-end of the retractor webbing, and other fixed belts just with webbing replaced. The "risk" part of buying old belts is that they may have 'seen' years of sunlight and be considerably weakened from the UV rays. That destroys plastics over years of seeing sun.
I bought from a company called Retro Belt for my 76, they're the dual retractor style. I got them through Summit Racing in the correct color.
Good luck
Peter

I am constantly slayed by my fellow Corvette builders, who are building a sportscar worth tens of thousands of dollars and decide to cheap-out with safety of flight items.
Hmm,. lets buy the cheapest...
Tires, brakes, seatbelts, steering coupler, ball joints etc.

This is what I did. I had a local aircraft interior shop sew the ends on. They did this for new a/c interiors so they had the proper technique down pat.
I have purchased cheap seatbelts from amazon. They are sitting in the envelope as the return shipping was too much. I was wanting to put a center seat belt in the back seat of my VW beetle. In the end, I purchased used buckles, new correct webbing, and correct bonded thread. I hand sewed the webbing in the same pattern as the originals with the same spacing. It was very inexpensive, looks good, and is as safe as if I had a local shop sew them. By the way almost every upholstery shop can sew seat belt webbing. They probably even have your color in stock.
