As many of you know I’ve been completely remodeling our home and landscaping our property, as promised to my wife before I begin the restomod of my 73.
I’m now starting the last project, the garage, and I’m making many improvements to aid in the restomod project.
The lighting has always been insufficient so among other things I’m planning all new lighting.
In other homes over the years I’ve always installed several twin 8’ fluorescent tube lights which has always proven to be more than adequate lighting.
I’ve been looking to see if there is anything new or better and found there are many LED lighting options that may be as good or better than the fluorescent tubes.
What are you using in your, garages or shops for lighting, how is it working for you and is anyone using the new LED tube lighting?
Thanks, Greg
i have the commercial 4 and 8 footer fluorescent...slowly replace with these...
good luck...
also i find ( insert your brand of battery operated tools) and search ebay or internet for the flashlights that match your brand voltage..many times ebayers flip the free tool on combo purchases, many times the lights..cant have enough
edit..also mine is on a kasa outlet..alexa can control lights, fan, and my SiriusXM channel and volume...wire all lights to one outlet ..kasa outlets handle 15 amps
I bought one of those 3 pod LED lights just to see if they really are 500% brighter and put it in our laundry room. Let me tell you it is 500% brighter than the 200 watt bulb we had there. I was impressed and my wife loves it. Best yet is they screw into a regular bulb socket. I'd suggest, depending on how big your garage is, to put screw in sockets where you want and get some of those. If I had a two car garage (I only have a one car but I only have one Vette) I'd probably put 4 of those suckers in there.
I have a two car garage. I converted my 2 eight footers with dual bulbs to LED bulbs. MAJOR difference. The LED bulbs much thinner and much brighter. Search on youtube for led conversion and you'll find many videos. LED bulbs require less watts so you can go watt crazy and light up your garage!!

Looks good. We have our first Cosco in the state opening in about 5 months.
I have done LED conversions from flourescent to LED on my existing fixtures and they work pretty well. You can do them with ballast or without. I cut the ballast out.
I purchased the flat LED panels at Home Depot (Commercial Electric), to replace my old fluorescent fixtures. A mounting plate is first attached to the ceiling, and they light is mated to the plate, very important if you don’t have any helpers. These LEDS are dimmable if need be, and come in 2x4 or 2X2 foot lengths.
One of the best things I did was convert the 2x8' fluorescent fixtures in my shop to LED's. Simple deal, remove the ballast and wire direct. Start up is fast in cold temps, brighter, quiet, no heat load, more light for less power. I did have one fail after 4 years, company replaced it for free. I used eledlights.com I converted my blast cabinet to one too and it really made a big difference- until the bead got into the led strip.
I just did this right before Christmas, 4 car garage about 900 sq ft.
I put in 8 48inch LED fixtures and its so bright now you need sunglasses.
I can not over state what a great upgrade it is for these tired old eyes.
I replaced my fluorescents with LEDs as well. I went with 5000 K for a real brightness. I paid about $10 each and did the direct wiring myself. Jerry
Yes- the 5000 K is consider "Daylight"- it made the biggest difference.
I have a bunch of can lights in my basement garage-changed them from the 2700 K (warm- very similar to incandescents)
and it was pardon the pun- like night and day!!!
FWIW- my mother-in-law thinks I'm great- I changed her can lights in the kitchen to 5000K - her cooking has improved dramatically- as she can now read the expiration dates!!!
I'll 2nd the Costco lamps. My 30x40 shop is done with them and they are very good. If you have a warehouse near you the lamps will generally be cheaper than online.
A little tidbit of knowledge gleaned from an AARP Driver Safety class: a person who is 40 years of age needs 20 times as much light to see the same level of brightness as a 20 year old!!! They didn't even mention how much more a 70 year-old would need. The 20 year-old's pupil close down a lot to prevent 'over-brightness'. The older we get, the more the pupils open to get the same 'apparent' brightness. Who knew??
