Looking for info on how to practically use the distributor cap window to adjust points. Seems much easier just to take the cap off. Is this why this unique feature (the window) was ultimately removed from distributor caps? Cannot seem to find much info about this at the usual internet sites.
This brought back lots of memories in my fuzzy old brain. I cannot imagine trying to set the dwell and removing the cap. How long must that take and how accurate could it be. The window works perfectly if you have the right tool. I got this a very long time ago and it makes this proecedure simple and quick.SPring loaded so it bends easily I even had an engine with dual points to do this with. Here is the tool that I still have although I most likely will never use it again. And I suppose the advent of electronic ignitions caused GM to close the window...sorry I couldn't resist.

Gm got rid of points distributors after 1974 and went to the HEI distributors so no need for a window. I agree with you that is easier just to remove the cap and adjust the points. That's what I do too. If you have a dwell meter you can still use it with the cap off .
kanvasman nailed it. It is MUCH easier to adjust through the window, while running, provided you have the correct tool and it works on any angle. In the points era this design once again put GM ahead of the blue oval and pentagram crowds.
Wonderful tool shown. Unfortunately, it only fits vans with a 454 in California. Or not.
I remember when a set of points & condenser came with an allen wrench. With a dwell meter laying on the Intake and the 283 idling, that little window in the cap made quick work of a otherwise pita job. Best invention since sliced bread. No more loosening the points. No more feeler gauge. No more taking the cap on & off.
Dwell setting first.
Then IGN timing second.
That metal window in the cap is flimsy. To tell the truth, I always just lift the window to max position and pull outward to put a little bend in it....just enough that it won't fall down. The 'cable' Allen wrench is a useful tool. But when you don't have to hold the window open, you can easily adjust the dwell with a long-shank Allen wrench. When done, just bend the window back straight and drop it down.
