Car for sale says it’s a 1972 with 427 4 speed convertible hard top but I can find no data to support 427 in 1972 and it has gills not louvers. Can someone please confirm. We haven’t got to look at it in person and are skeptical right now. Says it’s been stored for 38 years.
Engine swaps happen all the time.
A prior owner could have replaced the original engine with a 427.
Is it a big block or small block 427?
Are you looking at this through an add or is it being sold word of mouth?
If you have pictures share them so we can see what you are looking at.
Big block engine for 1972 was 454 cubic inches. The last year for the 427 was 1969. The base engine for 72 was 350 and there was an optional 350, the LT-1 which had solid lifters and could be ordered by itself or part of the ZR-1 package. It could certainly be possible to replace the 454 or 350 for that matter with a 427.
Different enough that you need to be careful and thorough on your evaluation of this one. Could be that some owner rebuilt the car WELL as he wanted. Could be a hodge-podge of 'stuff' thrown together. Could be a car built illegally with an 'orphan' VIN tag.
If the car is built well and you are interested in it, just contact your local police station with the VIN number to make sure it is 'legit'.
