Whenever the alternator was replaced on my '81, this bracket was not refitted correctly.
What is its purpose, what does the text refer to and what is the correct orientation of fitment as I can't make it fit in a way that looks and feels like it is serving a purpose.
I guessI guess you could throw the hood in as other potential victims. $12 fan belt ends up being a $500 paint repair would rather suck. you could throw the hood in as other potential victims. $12 fan belt ends up being a $500 paint repair would rather suck.

It's there to prevent belt "whip". If a whip develops between two pulleys (more likely at higher rpm) it can make the belt jump off the smaller pulley. In this case the alternator pulley. When adjusted down to 1/4" from the belt it stops the whip.
Ah, worked out what the problem is, I can't fit the bracket without it touching the belt, even on the end of it's travel - I need to rotate the alternator away from the engine and therefore down a touch to create any clearance, but I guess that's limited by the length of the alternator belt? I.e the only adjustment is the curved slot on the mounting bracket?
