Thank you. That's what I was hoping to hear.

I stuffed some foam in the vents to keep them from rattling, then cut some sheet metal, painted them black and installed under the grates to keep the hot air out

Interesting thread. Thanks, Pegan, for posting. Does anyone know if the Astroventilation vacuum canister is being reproduced? I’ve never seen one offered but wasn’t looking very hard either. This part and the thought of replacing the steel tubing from the control valve in the console all the way back to the rear bulkhead seems like a very tedious project with little benefit unless doing it for originality/judging purposes.

As already pointed out here, air conditioned C3’s had the Astroventilation works at the rear bulkhead blocked off.

Here is the original part number to help with your search 1998989 then part change to 1996504 in or about 1982. No known reproductions made.

When I added Vintage Air to my non-AC '73, I blocked off the rear deck vents but I left the kick panel vents operational. Vintage Air's instructions said to block off the kick panel vents but I chose not to as I thought there might be times I would want some additional ventilation. I figured if I didn't like the vents, I could always block them later. I'm glad I left them operational. The VA system can be so cold on milder days that I need to temper the air. Same during heating season - the VA can roast you at times and it's nice to be able to introduce a little cooler air. I also like opening the vents on those semi-cool days when I have the T-tops off. I don't have any issues with the vents allowing unwanted air into the cabin when closed. I don't know enough about installing factory AC into an original non-AC car to know if it allows for ventilation without needing the kick panel vents.
