I've been reading a lot of these threads on just about every topic, and my question is since I am at the bare bones vehicle stage, what opinions do you all have about getting completely rid of the "AstroVent" system?
I read one guy did it completely and it was a big help in keeping his interior cooler.
I don't think this car has any of the mechanicals associated with the AstroVent system on it...so since it isnt there, I need not worry about putting one back on?
That guy who deleted his actually glassed over openings associated with the system.

Sounds like something I would do
I allowed room/depth to reinstall the chrome grills to keep it looking "factory". I also added a drain tube to each "pocket" so water would not collect under the grills.
HOWEVER...if your system needs only the kit to replace the rubber rainwater diverters, it would be as easy to install the kit than to glass over the vent opening.
The white areas under the chrome grills are the "glassed areas"...I will Black the white areas out.

non astro cars still have the grilles and boxes. just don't work. and DG does the opposite. he finds the car with the most glassed-over stuff and cuts it all out and makes it work again..

EXCEPT for those rear vents...ALL the rubber flaps and drain tubes were rotted...
NOW...the front clip.....Guilty

Working properly the Astro-Vent system delivers a lot of cool airflow to the driver's legs at speed. The one in my almost new 75 worked perfectly, in 1978.
But with cowl air leaks it just delivers a lot of hot air. I believe most of the problems are from age-cracked bonding seams underhood, or under the fenders next to the cowl area, introducing 200 degree hot underhood air into the system. Or a missing rubber hood seal at the back of the hood. The old dried out bonding sealer simply cracks and leaks. All of those seams need to be air-tight for it to function properly, and keep the hot-air out.
I sealed mine off on my 68 when I installed a/c. Worthless hot air is all that ever came in. The upper ducts from the wiper trough I can be glassed over, or you can get a round plastic/fiberglass/pvc cover and glue it in. I got some with my a/c kit and I actually remove the protrusion on the passenger side and glassed it in because I didn't need it in the way of the a/c work I was doing. For the lower doors I just closed them and sealed them with RTV. No more hot air. I also insulated the whole bulkhead with that aluminized bubble stuff from the hardware store. Seems to work quite well.

The windows on my 72 have this script. Remember that from back when I was a kid and they were new. BUT it has factory A/C. Does this mean my door glass was changed or did they all have it ?
I love it so I'm not going to swap them out. Just curious.

What about outside air for the A/C, or is it just recirculating air?

I believe they all had the Astro Ventilation lettering regardless of whether it was an AC car or not.
Just recircs the air inside. Not that it matters much since I usually use it with the top down and blowing cold air on me. If I put the top up it cools the little cabin quite well even with that uninsulated fabric top.
