Default Steering Issue. Help needed

My steering pulls hard whichever way I start to turn. Example if I start turning left it'll pull 100% left; same if I go to the right. It's super easy to turn the steering wheel but it's dangerous when I drive over a tiny rock and my car decides to turn left or right on the freeway haha. I have a 75' Stingray. Any ideas on which part I would need to replace to fix this issue?

I have the same issue, it doesn't return to center on it's own like most cars. My reading points to stock caster settings, which aren't ideal for radial tires. I second the alignment suggestion, which I'll be doing here shortly.

If it were my car, I'd be looking at the power steering ram........

Just a rough guess, but I would suspect the Control Valve is over reacting to steering input. This makes the cylinder ram over compensate too.

With the vehicle up on ramps, disconnect the end of the ram at the frame, Cotter pin, nut washer. Start the engine and note if the ram stays put or cycles one way or the other. Then test the cylinders motion by having someone slightly turning the steering. Watch for anything unusual.

i was thinking that too , but wouldn't it go to one side vs the other biased? on the valve?

I checked the power steering oil and it looks good. I tried looking up "power steering ram" but was unable to find anything with that name; is that the power steering box? I had it aligned after this issue started and it didn't help at all. I looked up the control valve like you mentioned and I'll be removing that part later this week to see if that's what's causing the issue. Thanks

search power steering cylinder
i would as recommended pull link to cylinder with front wheels in air and check bias of power steering valve. I wouldn’t replace parts as you may make it worse/ leaks until narrowed down. All the suspension checked out?

can you post your alignment numbers?
post a few pics..maybe someone sees something.

My guess is power steering cars have the same steering box? It sounds like your lash is set too tight. On the top of the box you'll see the adjustment point. If it's too tight the wheels will not return to center by themselves as they should. Might be your problem but I don't know much about the power steering as I have manual. I had slop in my steering when I bought my Vette. It was a combination of the rag joint being shot and steering box wear. Replaced the rag joint and still had a little slop. Adjusted the lash, too much the first time and it would not self-center when I took my hands off the wheel. Back the lash off a bit and that worked. Still have a little slop but not near as bad as it was. I really should have it rebuilt.

I may have confused you, by using the term "power steering ram". It's the hydraulic cylinder "thingie" that the p/s hoses attach to, underneath the left side of the car. Apparently "control valve" is the proper term. I've done a fair amount of work on C-3s, but I admit that it's been a while since I've worked on one....

i mixed them up and ordered seals for cylinder not valve..still used the rubber for end though.

op
