I have been reading through the old threads and wanted post my pic to see if I should remove any of the interior stuff in the air cleaner. I saw some people took out everything besides the air filter for better air flow. Is that recommended?
Not sure. That was my first time opening the lid to see what it all looks like 🤣🤣. Pretty strong fuel/oil smell when I take off the lid to the air filter 🤷🏻♂️. This is my first carbonated vehicle so I’m still learning. The service manual I bought should arrive in mail soon. I’m assuming this is the stock setup but honestly I’m not sure.
I wonder instead of ripping it out, I can take out entire air cleaner and attach new one with k&n filter and keep original air cleaner on the shelf?🤷🏻♂️

Good find! That must be an 81-only thing.
I'd suggest you keep the dual-snorkel CAI if you can. It really does make a difference (on a summer day, an 80 degree difference). But perhaps you don't need that secondary screen? I've also removed the flappers and vacuum bits from my air cleaner assemblies, and blocked off the heat pipe. I thought that was what you were asking about.
I run normal air filters in my C3s and other cars, not K&N anymore.
You want to keep nearly all of that system intact. The little A/C-Delco gizmo is a 'spark arrestor' (I think). Also, the intake air for the PCV system is located on the bottom plate. I have no idea what that mysterious "ring" is that is inside the filter; but I would remove that, for sure. The rest of the system, including the double snorkel and the ducts going to the inlet over the radiator is a GOOD THING and should be retained. But, on the underside of one of those snorkels is the inlet for the 'heat riser' from the exhaust manifold. Keeping that is fine, as long as it is working properly. You do not want that baffle left open when the engine is already warmed up. Deal with it approrpiately.
In general, owners who do not know what all that stuff is for tend to dump it all out of ignorance. There are things to can dump and there are things that you should NOT dump. Learn about the system and make a 'knowledge-based' decision on what to keep and what to pitch.
