I have a 78 S/A with a red interior. It was pretty trashed and I have been working on this car for some time and I am finally starting to look at the interior. Seats are red, t top headliners red, windshield trim red,
dash red, sunvisors are black. I have no reason to think someone changed these out over the years ( all else in the car was original), so my question is were the sunvisors black originally? I know some vendors are selling red ones, and I could dye these myself, but I wanted to know why they might be black. This is not an NCRS build by any means, so I am just curious. I know pretty much everythign else about this car but this has me stumped. Thx.
They should have been red. The dash is the hardest thing to change, but that didn't stop a previous owner from spraying my 80's red dash black. The visors are really easy to change.
What does your trim tag say? It should be 72C (cloth) or 722 (leather) for a medium red interior.

If you aren't doing an NCRS restoration, you can have them be any color you want. I went back to red as much as I could, kept the black dash, and dyed all the top trim (including visors) is Oyster White. I traded away a pair of black visors to get white ones to match.

None of my interior panels are dyed so I guess someone changed out the visors. Trim tab calls for red leather. Never noticed the visors until I started going thru stuff a few weeks ago. I wIll see how well they clean up and dye them or look for some red ones. Thx

I`d probably find red ones rather than try to dye them. I`m not sure how well the dye works, but I do know that dyeing light to dark works much better than dark to light.
Sometimes black interior parts are cheaper than the same in color, someone probably went that route!
That's what I would have assumed happened. Cheaper, and sometimes the only color available for replacement, depending on when the change was made.
If you follow all of the steps of the SEM system, results can be fantastic. I've gone from black to Oyster White, and it looks like the factory painted them. I've also failed to do the steps correctly and had bad results. For a pair of visors, it might be easier and cheaper to find a used pair on this Forum or elsewhere, or do what I did and trade what you have. But don't be afraid of SEM dye when you need to use it.
Just get some spray vinyl dye in close color match (SEM ColorCoat is good). Clean them of all Armor-All , grease, oil, etc with detergent/water. rinse WELL, dry COMPLETELY. Then shoot 2 coats of dye on them. DONE. Why buy new visors if yours are in good shape? Can of dye and a little work.....
I will inspect them closely but I recall them being in good shape. Not quite ready for that project yet. In the meantime I will start looking for a deal on red ones. Then sell off the black ones. Thanks to you all for the input.
