Default Help Decoding Engine Date Please

Hello all.

Can anyone please help me ID the date on my block?
Here is what I have.

Pad below cylinder head
V1024CLA

Back of engine, passenger side.
one pad just has the number 3
the pad next to it has J202

Also, what would be the correct code for the carb based off the block date?

Thanks.

Eric

V1024CLA decodes as follows:

"V" - Flint MI engine plant
"10" - October
"24" -24th day of the month
"CLA" - Is the engine suffix code that identifies the engine as a 1973 base L-48 350, with a Turbo 400 trans

The "3" on the back of the engine could be a mold number, plant shift, etc, and not really needed to identify the engine.

J202 is the block casting date and decodes as:

"J" - October
"20" - 20th day of the month
"2" - The year, in this case 1972 (engines were also made in Tonawanda NY, and can be identified by a two digit year date code)

So all put together the info you provided indicates that your car has a 1973 L-48 350, with an automatic trans, with a block cast on October 20, 1972, and assembled in Flint MI on October 24, 1972. It all adds up to the original engine, as long as your VIN number is stamped on the pad next to the engine data.

Yes

The Q-jet number decodes as follows:

"704" - The part number for all Q-jets assembled through 76 start with either 702, 703 or 704.
"3" - Is the model year of the carb, not the assembly date. In this case it's a Q-Jet for a 1973 car.
"2" - Indicates a Q-Jet for Federal emissions (a "5" would be a carb for a car with California emissions).
"0" - Indicates a Q-Jet for a Chevrolet engine. "0", "1" & "2" all identify Chevrolet Q-Jets, while 4, 5, 6, 7 are other GM divisions.
"02" - Identifies the transmission.

7043202 is the correct OEM Q-Jet for a 73 L-48 automatic.

I'm not sure what the "J2" means, but I don't believe it's the date. Q-Jets used a four digit Julian date code. The first three digits are the day of the year, and the forth digit is the year of manufacture.

Your 6202 serial # car was built in early November of 1972. The J202 is the block casting date which is October 20, 2002. The V1024 stamp on the pad indicates the engine was built in Flint (MI) on October 24.

Thanks everyone. I’m picking up a qjet dated October 72 for my car. I really needed to confirm these dates on my block. 👍👍

You don’t need to. J2 means October 1972. If you look at your carb, it will say made by Carter. The Carter-made Quadrajets were dated month/year.
