Carfax goes back to 1981 - run it and maybe you can at least verify where it was last registered and go from there

How many miles are on this never registered car, which I find absurd? How much are you paying again? Just curious...

I took it to the CT DMV to get the car registered and they confiscated the title, handed me two plates and a registration and sent me on my way. All older cars are sold with a bill of sale only now. The DMV offers a very nice, official looking BOS for this purpose. In addition, because the car was bought out of state I had to get a VIN verification check which I can have done by my local Chevy dealer.
To get an inspection in my state you need a current registration, no title.

Also, in RI no titles are issued for cars 2001 and older. When I registered my 78 in 2003 I gave them the title that was signed over to me and the clerk handed it back. I asked when I would receive a title in my name and she said never and so far she has been correct. I am selling a 2000 today with no title to a guy in CT. Just handing over a current registration and bill of sale because the state will not issue a title. I can't make the state issue me one.

I don't know how that company can get a title if I can't. I even wrote to the newspaper "ask the DMV" this year and the response the same, no title issued for my 78.

Many years ago in the C2 forum, a similar situation. When they went to the DMV it was learned that the state was looking for their sale tax (since it was never registered) and the town has a property tax which needed to be paid going back those years. Opened a can of worms.

Joe, let me know if you pass on this car because I will buy it sight unseen without a title.

CNX that, brain fart. The car is a 1982 and would need a title to get a title in Alabama. If car was 1976 and earlier just a Bill of Sale.

You did good, I'm sure at the end of the day you can get it titled.

Quite a bit about this thread and some of the suggestions arising from it are promoting illegal activity.

This was also true the last time this thread was created. OP: don't post another one.
