Default Where do I wire in reverse lights on my ‘68?

When I bought the car someone had glassed over the reverse lights on my ‘68. I always thought that was a unique part of the ‘68 and had to have them back. My assumption is that at some point in its life, a PO tried to make it look newer by glassing them in.

Anyway, I have reinstalled the correct lower valance and lights but I dont know where to wire them in. I have a new backup light switch that I am going to screw on to my transmission and it had a pink and green

wire coming out of it. Where do those go?

Forward of the firewall in the engine compartment somewhere around the distributor and wiper motor area is the reverse light connector with the pink and light green wire. Find it and connect your reverse switch to it.

And then what about the lights in the back, where do they connect to?

The original harness would have had the 2 connectors to connect to the lamp housing pig tails. When they converted to the 69 and later design they would have had to convert them into the 2 center upper lamp backup lights. Which could means they removed those connectors from the rear harness. If so now you may have to replace the rear harness on your car.

Red arrows indicate the connection into the harness extention and other shows were the extension to the connection exits the harness.

Thanks, PJO. So it looks like I'll have to dig around at the rear and see if I can find any wires tucked away. I think there were some hidden in the back. I'll see.

check under the rear carpet. Maybe you will get lucky and the PO pulled them through the rear wall grommet

So behind the rear valance right dead center in the middle of the license plate I found these two red wires tucked away but I couldnt find any others. Could it be one set of wires that split off the both tail lights?

Then in the engine bay, near the wiper motor, I found this connector with a pink and green wire coming out of it. It matches the back up switch colors

but the weird thing is that the yellow wire that the PO stuck in there goes to my electric choke on my carburetor

I dont believe there should be any red wires in your rear harness. Could those have been spray painted red by somebody. It appears that there has been some red spraying done back there perhaps when the transition to the modified exhaust panel was done. As for the yellow wire coming out of the connector in your engine harness, someone robbed 12v power from the unused reverse light switch connector to power the choke. You can still use the reverse light connector, but, get your choke power from another circuit, perhaps splice into the yellow wire for the wiper motor? I think that is what I did. It’s been a long time ago for me.

I would try and connect your new reverse light switch to the pink and green connector under the hood and then tape it or somehow make the switch connection so that you get 12 volt power to the rear of the harness and then test those 2 red wires for 12 volts. If so, then you have found those back up lamp wires which are supposed to be light green for the power and black for the ground wire. Good luck.

The original wire were Green power and Black Ground from the harness. The connector on your backup light housing should match up with the harness connector.

Use some lacquer thinner to wipe off those wires. It will remove paint, etc but do no damage to the insulation.

To return your backup/tail light wiring to 68 factory original, you can buy a 68 repro tail light/backup light harness. I don't think they are all that expensive. Lectric Limited and M&H both sell these harnesses.

I prefer the 68 rear light arrangement to the 69 and up's. The 68 has four bright tail lights, not two for the 69 and up's. Since my 70 is not going to be a stock restoration, I installed the 68 tail lights and back up lights on the 70 and bought the corresponding 68 rear harness. Only compatible problem was the 70 "dome light," actually the rear storage compartment light. Had to buy a 68 "dome light" harness from M&H. They had one in stock! About $20.

So assuming the two wires coming out of the rear harness are for the backup lights, how do I connect them? Is there a splitter with connectors that I am missing because those two wires have to split off to both lights with connectors at some point

yes you are missing the rest of the pigtail and the plugs. If you look up the back up lights at one of the vendors you will see the rubber plug that seals and connects them. You can call a corvette recycler and ask for that part of the rear harness. All your going to find from the retailers news is this piece.
https://keenparts.com/corvette-parts...partnum=310128

it goes into the light mount so you still dont have the plug ends.

call Keen parts or paragon and ask if they have a used harness to get the last 3 feet for the backup lights with both ends of the plug
