Default removing automatic tranny on a C3

My 1976 was born with a 4 speed tranny someone removed and installed an automatic. I want to go back to 4 speed, with the welded in cross member for the manual tranny does the engine and tranny have to come out as one or can the automatic be removed separately .

You can disconnect the engine from the transmission and just pull the engine and THEN the transmission, if you prefer. You can also remove them together and then split them.
If you want to keep the welded cross member, either method would work. If you don't have enough ceiling height to allow pulling them as a set, just separate them first.

Gotch either way they both have to come out cannot just drop the tranny. I have a 4 post lift and 12 foot of ceiling height so I can pull them both together

Pulling them together seems the easiest way, just have a helper there to steer the tailshaft out of the way of the body as it comes out
