update: finally had time to pull some spark plugs. I pulled 1 and 3. Both plugs were completely fouled. I didn't even do a compression check. With over 100k miles,, I'm just going to go thru the entire engine. Thanks for everyone's help!
major decision based of not enough info ... do the compression & leakdown tests ... it may well be something relatively simple such as leaking intake gaskets and/or bad-missing valve stem seals. You can R&R intake gasket & valve stem seals without pulling heads. But you cannot KNOW where you're really at until you do the tests. But, if ya really wanna pull & build motor then go for it; your car, time & $.

Buy an OTC leakdown tester......perform a leak down test on all eight cylinders......
That amount of oil consumption will crop dust like crazy.......my money is on a leaky intake underneath.....a slow sucking consumption that will not always make for smoke.
Do not assume anything until you know......
