Default Frame Coating

For all of you that have done a body off, what is your preferred frame coat/paint and why?

Powder coat. Durable. Long lasting. I also bought the Eastwood Internal Frame coating (because you can’t get the powder inside the frame). I just picked up my frame from the powder coater a few days ago, and the Eastwood stuff is in the mail. I’m very happy with how it turned out.

Place I took it to charged $500. That included sandblasting and coating it. Which I thought was very reasonable.

Sounds quite reasonable. What gloss level did they use with the powder coat? Flat? Satin? Semi-gloss? And can you post a closeup of the frame to show the gloss level? Much appreciated.

another powder coat vote here... $800 was what it cost me for blasting and powder coating. 60% gloss black powder was used. Also protected the inside of the frame with Eastwood Internal Frame Coating.

I had my frame electrochemically stripped (full immersion so every molecule of oxidized material was removed). That was $250 (in 1987).

Shot with zinc chromate primer, then epoxy primer then PPG Durethane enamel. Coated all interior surfaces with Auto Armor rustproofing. Only out of pocket for me was the materials.

That was 35 years ago. Looks today as good as it did then.

I used the Eastwood 2K chassis paint for the outside and Eastwood internal frame paint for the inside. For my 70 and 72.

Just a note on powder coat, If you use one of the standard colors that the powder coater uses everyday it can save you some money. Also most powder coaters will plug tapped holes. Make sure you ask.
Powder doesn't like sharp edges. Use a file or a sander to knock edges off.

The guy called it semi gloss black. This is the closeup. Looks really similar to the other powder coated parts I have (from numerous other vendors).

Looks nice!
current factory underbody powder coatings are epoxies ~60 gloss units +/- ~ 10 -20 units.
Gm black I’m pretty sure is still ‘848’ black.
i can find the exact number if needed..pic is that powder on valve covers and air cleaner top and 6 mile 79 frame which is not powder but for color gloss reference

GM chassis black. Dipping and powder coating wasn’t an option for me. Pictures of the body off are in my profile.

I have a few questions for those who chose to go with Powder Coating the chassis.
  1. Did you spray the inside of the chassis before or after Powder Coat?
  2. If any welding or repair was needed, was it easy to spot before the blasting was done?
    • I ask this question because I am afraid of missing issues if I don't get to inspect after the blasting process only to receive it back Powder Coated and find a bad weld or a crack.

Powdercoating is the best option, in my opinion. I paid $600 to have the frame sandblasted and powdercoated. That is a deal. Epoxy paints and primers are not cheap, and the blasting is a must. My process....I used dye grinders and sanding discs on an air driven tool, and remove ALL the weld spatter, small beads of molten metal, poor welds, rough edges, etc. I also round all sharp edges, because powder will stick better to round than sharp edges. THEN I take the frame to the blaster, and have the entire frame blasted. Bring it back home, and do all weld repairs, etc. The frames are stagger welded,.....I fill in between the staggers, and grind out any poor welds and weld as it should be. Some people put bracing in strategic positions, I haven't. Once this is all done, it goes to powdercoating, with a very nice semi gloss powder.....and it comes home BETTER than GM ever dreamed. I then used Eastwood internal frame coating,....now made in black, through all the many holes in the frame to coat and protect the inside.
