Default larry gets a sub

Last summer I finally put some speakers and a sub in the back of Larry. I wanted to try a self powered sub for a while and saw one on CL, so I grabbed it. Turns out it puts out plenty of bass for the small space of a C3 and only cost me a few inches of space in the back. I travel in my car and need to put suitcases back there, and also would like to keep the option to stow my T Tops back there so I did not want to give up very much of the little bit of space I have.
I put component speakers in the back with the tweeters mounted forward of the cabinet so they have a clear shot. The kenwood amp sends power to the rear speakers as well as the front kick panel speakers. This worked well for me since it got me a sub, rear speakers, and the amp all placed in the rear and only gave up a few inches. I made the cabinet it two pieces so it was easier (read: not as damn hard) to put in the car. It bolts together once it is in the back, and then the cover piece goes on.

I measured and made the box in a traditional way and just built it. Getting the cover to fit took a little bit more work. I took a piece of card board and made a bunch of parallel slices along one edge. I put it in the back and then pushed it up against the left contour in the back bending all the tabs over.. Then I pushed each tab against the side. Once that was done I marked along the bends and then cut them off and had a template. If you have ever used a contour gauge in wood working then you know what I was going for I made a second one for the right side and then measured how far apart they were and had my template.
The plan was to use cheap carpet from Menards to cover it until I got better carpet that matches closer, but now it is installed and we will have to see if I ever get that part done.
I drove my car tens of thousands of miles of the course of seven years with no speakers at all. I had just installed a Kenwood deck with Car Play last summer and I just wanted to be able to hear the navigation voice. I put some speakers in the kick panels and was surprised how good they sounded. Sitting still. In the garage. (LOL) I went out on the road and turned it on and I could barely hear it and ALL of the low end was being canceled out by C3 sidepipe glory so I decided to add more speakers, more power, and a sub.
I added all of this stuff right before i left on a 500 mile trip. I got out on the highway and turned it all on. It was plenty loud and sounded pretty good. Then I turned it off and have not listened to another song since. I drive with the windows down and so by the time you get enough volume to overcome the noise of the side pipes, the tires and the wind and then add all the noise you are trying to overpower, it is pretty loud and not something that I enjoyed as much as just driving down the highway with my arm out the window listening to the side pipes.
Overall I am happy with the results, and am still glad I did it even thought I don't use it that much.
