Default Hidden Gems

Sometimes you search through a few items only to locate a hidden gem. Sometimes it is nothing more than a pile of junk and it can be the luck of the draw. I purchased a pile of fiberglass parts last week from a gentleman in New Jersey who wanted to get the parts removed from his closed repair shop. Here are the pictures he had in his advertisement.

The price was good so I went and looked at the parts and decided it was worth the time and money to bring these items home. It took me a couple of visits with me and the help of a good friend in the area but we managed to get the parts to my house and to the house of another good friend for sorting, cleaning, and inventorying. From this pile I got the following parts cleaned and at my home now.

But there was a somewhat hidden gem in amongst the doors and panels which came with the deal. It was this 6 X 8 homebuilt landscaping tilting trailer. Much like the body itself it was rough, but I am going to restore it and put it into service. I have the help of my Corvette friends as well as a great media blaster/powder coating company in my area and a great welder/fabricator that will make a new tailgate and add tie down strap brackets for me. New tires and new lights are on order now. Should be a nice usable utility trailer for me and my sons (one of which is already asking when it will be ready to be used).

Some people call us corvette pickers crazy for what we do and that is okay, it is their opinion. Others enjoy the hobby of helping others with parts and panels and whatever it takes to assist them in getting their cars back on the road. We do it for the love of the car, and the hobby. Keep your eyes open in those barns, fields, old retired gas stations, and old car body shops. There might just be a pile of parts worth having with a gem or two hidden within.
Best regards,
David Howard

The body is a 1974 automatic, 56L yellow with 408 neutral interior. The trim tag and VIN tag are still on the body but not for long. The trim tag will be heading to Brad Hillhouse for his research into trim tag authenticity for NCRS judging. The VIN tag will be removed and destroyed as this car is not titled and will never see the road again as a whole car. Parts of this car will be used to help others with their projects and budget builds. Some of these parts will wind up in a dumpster. The fronts are 1973-1977 front quarters. The rears are 1973-1982 quarters. I will cut these up soon to help make repair panels. If I can keep one more car on the road with the aid of donor parts then I am going to try and do so. More pictures of the rear clip shortly, I left my camera at Bob's house and will have to retrieve it to post those up here.

Best regards,

David S. Howard

It is an addiction, I agree, but going cold turkey just doesn't make sense to me at this time. This hobby and gift giving keeps me active and physically moving which is what I need to do in my retirement. I have given away more parts than I have ever sold which brings its own rewards. More people should try it. And speaking of giving away parts, I think I have found a home for one of two of the front fenders and hope to be carrying them down to Florida with me on my up and coming visit. My good friend Ray is down there and he might be in need of those which would make me happy. Nothing better than getting parts where they belong and where they can be used.
Have a fantastic Winter to you all.
