1971 Electric Windows
so, my passenger side window about 3 weeks ago went down, but will not go up.
i bought new switch's, thinking that was the issue.
when i opened the console, the switch has 12v for up. or down. so it doesn't need new switches
I open up the door panel, and found no voltage at the plug on the back of the motor. it was a blue and a black wire.
for now, i just want to get the window up. if i apply 12v to the back of the switch, it clicks, but doesn't go up or down.
am i wrong to assume i can just apply 12v here, and the window will go up?
is there a 3rd connector, as the switch as 3 connectors, i suppose 1 up, 1 down, and either power or ground?
i think i am looking at a bad wire somewhere in the circuit, or is there a separate fuse for left/right window motor power?
thank you for your help,
.
The motor on those ones actually have 2 sets of windings and the case is ground (as opposed to the new ones where the two connections on the motor are reversed to go up/down)
You can test each wire at the motor plug with a test light grounded to the door or whatever and see if they each get power (one with the switch up the other with the switch down)
If you just want to get the window up, use some jumpers and ground the case of the motor and then touch one of the motor connectors, if that doesn't work, then try the other one.
Here's the diagram that you can use to chase the entire circuit

That makes sense now.
I have 12v at the switch's, so it might be a wiring fault. what what i see someone has been inside this door before.
the plastic shield is gone, and the screws were a little buggered up.
for now i will apply power to get the window up and then start tracing the wires to the fuse block.
thank you,
still struggling with this problem.
the windows switch's are both good, i bought 2 now i don't need them..
my question is, how can i get to the ground wire going to the motor directly.
i see for the passenger side, the blue is for up, but putting the ground to the door frame
does nothing. touching the motor case also does nothing.
i know it must have a ground wire. is it hoiden behind the motor?
is there an access panel i am not seeing?
maybe i need to pull the motor out, and manually manipulate the window up? how can I do that?
any help would be appreciated. for now, i just want to get the window up.
You should see power (test light) from the door frame (somewhere clean) to one of the two wires for the motor depending on if you're pressing the up or down on the switch and then to the other with the switch pressed the other way.
There is always a possibility that someone updated the motors to the newer style that reversed the two wires for up / down rather than the early ones that had the separate coil windings
To check for that (unlikely but possible) case, there would be power to ground on the two wires for the plug one way with the switch pushed up and then reversed with the switch pushed down

a little more troubleshooting.
i connected by meter to the connector on the back of the motor.
i get 12 volts when i use the window switch to go up. and, on the other terminal, i have 12v at the motor as well.
grounds are good, so are the switch's, and the relays.
process of elimination, its the power window motor.
any tips on where to buy a good ne, Paragon, Eckles, Mid- America,
and does anyone know how I get it out? it doesn't look all that straight forward to me, will i have to remove
the entire window glass and racks, and I suppose i should change out the windows bushings?
thank you,
No you can get it out without taking everything else out (which is a good thing) there is a critical point of installing something to hold the gear when the motor is removed or the giant spring in there turns the whole thing into a cigar cutter... with your arms and hands in there. To move the window if the motor isn't working (as long as you're sure it's the motor) here a method of moving it. Also where to install the safety bolt

I took off the motor cover, it was disintegrated inside, a ton of carbon and junk came out. The biggest issue was the rear bolt on the motor.
the 2 forward ones were easy, the back one not so much,
in any case, I was able to spin the armature to get the window ups. I found a U-Tube video
of some one doing this on a 1977 and the window must be up to get to the bolts that hold the window on,
so it had to happen anyway.
On the beach the motor was toast.
I ordered parts from Paragon, I have had success for the most part with them. Of course i ordered a lot more
parts than needed but I will have them if I do,
thank you to all for the help, especially the tip about the bolt so i don't take my arms off.
