So....Intake manifold gasket correct? see that big gap in the corner there, where the coolant was coming from? there was a piece of rubber gasket same color as the red gasket u see in the pics. It was loose so I ripped it off. Hence that gap. My question is 2 fold. Number 1, is my assumption of intake manifold gasket correct? Second, and more pressing, I ran this test while the engine was cold, and I stopped it pretty quick so it didn't reach operating temp. Therefore, shouldn't there have not been any coolant in the engine at all?

Indeed. Shouldn't there not have been any coolant flowing though, if the thermostat is closed? Interesting how this is the corner where the intake manifold meets the valve covers, not the corner where it meets the head. The gap in the last picture shows it

Right where that bolt for the AIR pump bracket goes through the intake. Just so you can see what is in that area, I posted a picture of that area on my 82 with the intake removed (I just did a complete re-gasket job on my 82 intake).

thanks for the pic. Are those small circles the coolant ports?

I was suggested by an old mechanic to just inject silicone or some other sealant into that gap in the corner. Thoughts?? Will it work?

Nope. You really need to get in there, clean, and dry those surfaces for the RTV to adhere. PLUS, that intake gasket is compromised and may end up leaking coolant into the lifter valley and contaminate the oil. Severe damage can result if you don't catch that in time!

The coolant ports are the square ports on each end of the heads; the taller paired rectangles are the air/fuel ports that go to the valves. The smaller rectangle port in the center is for exhaust gasses to cross through the intake and speed up engine warm up. The round circles are the bolt holes to each side of each port.

ok thanks. I’m gonna do another test run tommorow just to verify this corner, and I’ll get started on this intake gasket replacement
