Otherwise, you'll have do divide in half.

You should have nice and tight steering once everything's installed. Let us know how it goes and your impressions before/after.
it’s a 70. I plan on tackling this tomorrow. I’ll look again for the flat spot. Would it be at the pitman end or the steering shaft end?

Update…I took the 3 frame bolts out and loosened the coupler. I couldn’t loosen the arm from the valve stud and starting feeling sick so I had to stop. The last 2 times I changed the valve I believe I used a pickle fork. I will try to rent one today to break it loose. I had headers and I’m concerned I won’t be able to get the box out with the pitman arm attached. Does anyone know?

I have headers too. I don't remember the exact interference issue but I know I disconnected the pitman arm from the box in the car. You just need the right puller tool.

that’s what I was concerned about. Did you use the right size socket? Or did you turn using something else? I don’t have a 1”5/16 socket which I think is the size.

Did you take the pitman arm off the control valve? I’m thinking that’s not necessary if you remove it from the box in the car.

Got the box out. Removed the pitman arm from the box to pull it out. My new coupler does not have a ground strap on it. I noticed the one I pulled out does have one. What is this for?

The horn button grounds through the steering column. Your old steering coupler had a ground strap. IIRC, some grounded through metallic fibers embedded in the rag joint.

At any rate, your new rag joint does not have embedded fibers. Use your old ground strap, or fashion a new one, if you want your horn to work.

The strap is connected under one of the pins which is not removable. Is there an alternative way anyone has used to make this ground?

You just need to bridge across the rag joint. You could put two loop end splices on a short piece of wire. I used Flaming River U-Joints, that are metal, and conduct enough to work, but I still added a piece of wire (I can't find a picture right now, unfortunately).

You'll still need bridge a new-production rag joint if you want your horn to work.

Also, yes, they are awesome.

ok thanks. That one looks great. For whatever reason my horn still works without the strap. I got the new box in along with the new coupler and took it for a short ride. So far so good. I’ll take it on higher speed tomorrow.

It’s all done. Big thanks to those that took the time to provide guidance. You made this a lot easier for me. Now o need an alignment but the steering still seems to have a little slop. Should I adjust anything on the new box? I did notice the pitman arm connection at the valve had quite a lot of pivot movement. Is that supposed to be that loose?

This project is in my future, mine is P/S. Is there any reason NOT to go with the Borgeson, other than cost?

mine is ps too. Cost is a big factor but I kept hearing how a finely tuned box and coupler makes dramatic difference.

The valve has play in it when parked with the engine off. When the PS pump is running, it should tighten up a bit. If you have a set of ramps, and can do this safely, take a look while the engine is running. You will need a helper to turn the wheel while you look for where the play is.

Availability. You should order it now if you want it in the future.

Here's the longest Borgeson thread I'm aware of.
