Default Stupid question

Can a cigarette lighter be used as a 12v source for a charger or does it not work that way since the cig charger has to be pushed in temporarily?

Yes you can use the lighter receptacle as a 12v source - there are a multitude of adapters available for that purpose.
The ejection of the lighter element is built into the portion that pulls out. The lighter receptacle is always hot = 12v batt

The biggest issue really is the size of the lighter receptacle. Seems more modern cars are a slightly different size. At least with the older C3's. Not really sure about the last of them and no idea of the year of your car.
Also keep in mind due to the wiring size. You will only be able to use a trickle charger through the lighter socket.
However, is it really difficult to just open the compartment door?

I always have issues with my stock lighter. I added a double receptacle behind the dash and have 2 phone chargers tied into it. One for my Android and one for a CrApple. I ran it off a separate auxiliary fuse block tied into the fuse panel to trigger a relay giving it power on a 10 ga wire for direct battery supply.

that’s good for latter owners. But early ones that are not should be careful leaving things plugged in over a long time.

Short answer: YES. Same as any other cig lighter.
