So I may be in a position to afford some side pipes for my '69 shortly. I love the factory covers, but I know factory pipes are a bit restrictive. I also love the way the knuckle (collector) looks on aftermarket side pipes and you can get a bigger pipe. Not in love with the covers that are commonly available though. Anybody ever tried to combine the two? Anybody got pics?
The difficulty lies in the factory style covers will not accommodate the large side tubes (4in) of the Hookers/Dougs . The largest tubes that will fit are 3in and even still may not be completely hidden under the tubes.
I was able to fit 4" pipes under the factory covers- I used ½ rect tube to space out the covers-
Custom stainless steel with internal electric cut outs-
½" rectangle tube used to space the insulator -covers out
And cut up a rocker panel to totally trim out the pipe covers-
That looks great Richard, nice to see the tubes fit with mods. The stock '69 cover would have to be cut, and just use the covers over the side tubes. I think this could be easier achieved with the fiberglass covers.

Richard, do you have 2 exhaust systems on the car, one thru the pipes and one thru the back? Next question, where did you get the pipes? Last question, when are you going to make a kit so we can all put electric cut outs in our pipes to go along with our wiper doors and headlight buckets! You are the man, no question about it.

Hey Jim-
"You are the man" -Yep and my pronouns are He/Him!!!
I made then- just one pipe
Way too much work- stainless steel is way to expensive-
Quite a project. A bit out of my league. I have a set of Allens QUIET pipes with c2 sidepipes on my project and they are still loud. Not cruising in the car yet buI am keeping an eye open as to making them a little quieter in the future if I need to and have been thinking about 2 sets of pipes with the elec cut out. OR just a choke cable like we used to do. Keep up the good work. Thx.
