I’m doing some engine mods,I bought this vette in February a 1981 and it was stock, but I just recently found out that I have a 272 gear, although I only drove the car maybe 100 miles, and 60 of that from NC,where I bought it back to SC, so,how hard is it to remove the gear box, because I have the engine apartand of course can’t take it no where,so,plan on removing it and taking it to someone to put in my new ring and pinion gear set.like how high do I need to get it out,and any special tools to remove it. Thanks

theres no special tools required but you want to be careful taking the rear spring suspension bolts out while its attached to the trailing arm if it still has tension on it. just dont drop it on your head. Post pics as you go
I assume you are talking about the differential when you say gearbox? The differential is not difficult to remove, although I have the luxury of a car lift to make life easier. Removing the rear spring is the only thing that can be difficult and can also be dangerous if not done correctly. There are lots of YouTube videos on that process. Be prepared with extensions and sockets with universal joints to remove the axles and disconnect the driveshaft and U-Joints, take your time and plan how to go about pulling the differential.
Yea,sorry differienal,I know I’ve always heard hog head, but different axles,I think over the years have seen a lot of stuff with cars, but have never seen one pulled.

Go to you tube and find some videos. It will give you an idea of what can cause issues. You dont have the sombreros that are a pain if they are sticky and you might miss a few things like the front bushing that seems to hide itself. I dont know how easy iot is to get to your top bolts for the batrwing. I would hose it all down with penetrating oil the noight before you start
Oh they are definitely not new, hadn’t looked back there real good yet,and still have the spare tire cover in place, and I’m pretty certain that when I take it off,it will be the original tire.but, yes will definitely replace the u joints.
I'm in the minority here. I have a 700-r4 and went from a 2.87 to 3.07 rear with the intent of regearing my original rear with 3.31 gears. After having the 3.07 for a while, I have no intention of the 3.31 regear.
