Wow, sounds like you got a great deal. Hard to say about the tires. Some tires get brittle and crack much sooner than others. ..I've had tires older than 10 yrs. But best if you get some new ones.

Hey bud, I'm also in Mass and just last fall bought an 82 CE with only 9300 miles!! We should compare these 2 low mile ladies

Also, get new tires before you drive it. Mine had orig tire too, put about 100 miles on them, and when removed they were found to be cracked and split on the treads, but the sidewalls looked great! Please don't drive on those tires!

Oh and congrats to you and the OP, for both buying 82 CE's!

Beautiful. Yea, I'm well aware of the issues with 40 year old tires. Where did you find the tires? I want them to at least look correct. If you're ever coming to the Cape, let me know. I would love to see both these cars together.

I'm at the tire shop as I type this. I have already replaced the original tires with new reproduction Goodyear Eagle GT tires I purchased from Kelsey Tire. One was defective. They replaced it and today I mount and balance.

I waited almost 8 months for these tires. And they are silly expensive. But they are correct.

If I were to do it again, it would be Cooper Cobra tires and there would have been tons more driving time instead of waiting all this time....

I love original looks but those Kelsey Eagle GT'S are more than I spend on my Viper tires.
I may go with BF Goodrich TA'S, White lettered for about $700 for 4. I'll keep the originals if I go for NCRS judging.

I found a set of CE wheels, and had those refinished and put the new tires and new center caps on. The original tires are still mounted to the original wheels and center caps.

With this defective one replaced, the car is a dream to drive at higher speeds compared to before. Now it rides nicely and looks wicked awesome with Eagle GT's....

An almost $5000.00 idea.

Used wheels with shipping, $925
refinishing with shipping both ways, approx $1500
New center caps $625
New repro Eagle GT's $1800

But they look bitchin.....

Now,, if I were to do it again, Cooper Cobra's on the original wheels, $600 bucks and driving....

I'm a dumbass.

Now, the Crossfire needs some love and understanding

But I just had a pretty sweet 2 hour drive with ttops off and man, I love this car.

I've had way faster, way more valuable cars many times in the past.

This car is my emotional attachment. I grew up with Dad having a CE. Love this car.....

Sorry about the thread hijack!

If your ECM ever dies, just put an EBL ECM and be done and don't even mess around for countless hours looking for an 82 ECM that is 40 years old and probably junk. As a matter of fact, getting a spare ECM probably isn't a bad idea right now.

Hey Buc, was waiting for you to chime in. I'd love to ship my CE to you and have you tune it so it runs as it's supposed to. My car has been to 2 shops already, one supposed a Chevy tech at the dealer back in 82, and neither can get this thing to work correctly. Its not super bad, but it ain't right.

Also I've read a bit about the updated ECU from an early 90's Caprice that is supposed to make this thing run super smooth.

Anyways, always good to see you chime in.

I haven't read all the comments here so I may be repeating some but there is not a single bad thing about a C.F. car. Somebody that knew somebody's someone had one and it was this or that, bullshit. I had an 84 for 20 years and the only issue I ever had was a TP sensor went out under warranty and was replaced. The 82 CE is a gorgeous car,my only complaint with latter year C3s is GM just kept crammin crap under the hood to the point it looked like 20 pounds of **** in a 10 pound bag.

I assume ECM is Engine Control Module??? I'm a newbie, what does it do?

Compared to other C3's I've seen, when I opened the hood of my CE I said holy moly there's hardly any room to even stick your hand in there.

Funny, I was at a cruise night last weekend and ran into a guy who bought his CE brand new in 82. 53,000 miles. I asked if he had any issues with the Crossfire FI. He said not once. He also believes it got a bad rap. If left unmolested, they run pretty good. The only issues he had were pretty routine maintenance, like weeping brake calipers. Original radiator still in the car.

I've always been a car guy and was around when crossfires and computer controlled engines came out, in fact I was a computer electronics tech. I firmly believe in the "where there's smoke, there's fire" train of thought when it comes to troubleshooting and there were tons of issues with these cars back in the day, and that's when parts were plentiful. Sure there were/are cars that had no trouble at all but if that was the norm then how did they earn their questionable rep? My 80 Camaro threw codes almost as fast as I lit cigarettes in it and it was pretty basic, turned out the cat fell apart inside and would occasionally block the exhaust throwing a code, that took awhile to find and I think many were recalled...The techs of the day were not used to the electronics, many preferred the days of points and condensers where you could physically see what was wrong. The CF was a remarkable system for it's day, so were the PC's of that time period, Just like I don't miss spending all night preparing a 20 meg hard drive_(remember disk manager), I also don't miss counting check engine flashes to get a code. Kudos to those here that keep them running, just not for me anymore...

How they got a bad rap is hearsay and bullshit. It the CF stigma didn't start with the 82,it started with the 84. I know,I was there. And the ironic part I. All of this is from other C4 owners would always look down on the 84 and criticize the car every chance they got,it was relentless. Then,at some point somebody figured out the 82 also had the CF setup so they must be junk too. Back then I heard of more problems, issues with TPI cars than 84s. And now all C4s are the red headed step child that nobody wants. The truth is,if I had the space I'd buy a low mile 84 without hesitation.
