Yes, the cars computer. Without it, the car is a large paperweight. The EBL ECM is the way to go on ANY CFI car if your stock ECM goes out. Don't even waste your time looking for another stock ECM. .
How they got a bad rap is hearsay and bullshit. It the CF stigma didn't start with the 82,it started with the 84. I know,I was there. And the ironic part I. All of this is from other C4 owners would always look down on the 84 and criticize the car every chance they got,it was relentless. Then,at some point somebody figured out the 82 also had the CF setup so they must be junk too. Back then I heard of more problems, issues with TPI cars than 84s. And now all C4s are the red headed step child that nobody wants. The truth is,if I had the space I'd buy a low mile 84 without hesitation.
I agree the CF has always gotten a bad rap for no other reason than its different. No one wants to troubleshoot anymore, if throwing parts at a problem doesn't fix it than it must be a poorly designed system. On the subject of the C4 being the red headed step child this has more to do with the car than the engine IMO. As with everything in the 80's that car is just ugly.

I was also there, as a computer electronics tech and part time car guy. It was not just the system but the electronics of the day were not always reliable and then there was the poor assembly techniques often used. It was not just corvettes, the Camaro crowd of which I was one also pulled their hair out at times. I cant remember ever talking to a professional mechanic who remembers the CF fondly. That does not mean the system was junk, it just means the guys of the time had trouble keeping it running right, everything breaks sooner or later. And you will always find someone who says such and such is a great thing, mine has been trouble free, while there might be a bunch of people saying the opposite... In the 70s my boss had one of those 4-6-8 Cadillacs that we road around in every day, not a lick of trouble, yet they were so much trouble for GM they were quickly discontinued... I would not go around saying they were the greatest thing since sliced bread either... Mechanics like things that are easily fixed-(easy money), and consumers like things that don't need mechanics....the CF often fell out of those parameters for various reasons..

I would have to agree with this. The issue more times than not is, Bubba gets in there and starts messing around with things he has no idea what they are or how they work and really screws things up. At that point, now it takes a lot to figure out what "Brain Surgeon Bubba" did and fix his brilliant ideas. I have seen a lot of this type of stuff over my 30+ years working with CFI on all models and years. Some times it makes your head spin. Like anything, after 40 years, electronics go bad and need replacement. The ECM is a great example of that. When they go bad, replace them with an EBL and be done with it.

Thank you. Runs great. Unfortunately, I smelled anti freeze on my 10 mile maiden voyage. May be the heater core. I'll get it on the lift tomorrow and check the hoses to the core on the firewall. Weird, it appears to be leaking near the overflow tank. There is some moisture on the passenger side floor. Not looking forward to a heater core change. I've done a few and they aren't fun. That's what 40 years of sitting can do. Not unexpected.
taste the wetness on the floor. if sweet, disconnect the heater core and either plug both hose outlets at the engine or run a loop hose between them. and C4's are not ugly. they are the prettiest camaros since the 69...

Agreed. It's anti freeze. I will probably bypass the core so I can drive it until I get psyched to do the core.

I'm about to change my heater hoses and the way they are routed the coolant could easily run down the out side of the hose and drip under or very near the overflow. My return hose got a pin hold under the AC compressor and it ran down the bottom of the hose and dripped to the floor in the same area, I was worried about my core as well. But if you have coolant inside then you know what it is...I'm worried that when I try to take the old hoses off I will start a core leak, but they are 40 years old so I should give it a shot...

40 years will do it. Mine runs really good except it just seems like there may be a little miss. It seems to idle just a little rough. There is one guy in town that everyone recommends for working on the cross fire so I'm going to wait till he can look at it. I replaced the plugs, wires and distributer cap, didn't seem to help, Like you said, it's 40 years old.

It was the heater core. I bypassed it and drove it today. Runs and idles like an 8,800 mile car should. No shakes or shimmies with the original tires.
Battery died. New one in today. Just sorting it out. Heater core coming from Zip tomorrow. Need to fix the antennae. It's not going up.. That should be fun too.
Worth it though.. These cars look great.

This is pretty much what your looking forward too, this is in a 75 but a lot of the same components. These are pads on the floor,I had the interior out for a serious deep clean, detail.

Yep, I've done them. Not looking forward to it. Low mileage but a 40 year old car. I expected some sorting.
