Thanks CaskiGuy (and Mooser). I'm thinking I'll just sink it directly back as far as the opening allows and leave it offset so as not to block the loight and not blind the image.
How about something like this? Before you go ugh, the entire bracket mounts BEHIND the license plate with only the camera peeking over the top.

Got on ebay, don't remember from who.
Just search backup camera and look for a listing showing the bracket.
I paid like $30 for the entire system. Monitor kinda small, may someday buy a larger screen.
