Back in the day when a 68 was my DD in upstate NY I would remove the soft top and install the hardtop at the beginning of the winter. Easy decision due to no top down days up there during winter plus gaining additional storage. I was a lot stronger back then-I would install the hardtop by myself and would store it in my the bedroom of my second floor apt.
As far as going "topless", I would NEVER trust the weather.
