What is the condition of your gauge bezel? If it's cracked/broken at the corners just cut it for DIN-1. If it is not then buy a replacement bezel and install a shallow DIN-1 without a CD..... When my last AM/FM/CD player failed I bought this cheap thing just to temporarily fill the hole while I looked for a good one.....but it's worked so well that it's been in there for years..... and it is so much easier to deal with when installing. Not to mention that I have room behind for other toys. I don't play CDs anymore and this thing has an AUX input and USB connection and it pairs with my phone (not that I can hear **** in a convertible). I have a USB flashdrive that will hold hundreds (if not thousands) of songs.
About 31 years ago my '72 vert grew a couple of 6x9 speakers in the rear vertical panel, and the backside of the speakers have a flexible plastic 'bucket' to keep water out.....worked fine, GOOD sound.....I dunno about how a hardtop would work out....but certainly worth investigation.....
I would suggest mounting your rear speakers low in your convertible so they're not blocked by the top when it's down. This is what I did. Made a big difference.
If you decide to go modern vintage stereo, you might try giving these guys a call. New modern stereo radios that look and fit just like your old AM/FM radio but that have all of the modern bells and whistles, including hands free calling. https://www.radiosforoldcars.com/
Have you (or anyone else here) used these "Radio For Old Cars" units? How is the sound quality and how well does it work with external sources?
